Hey guys I want to apply soon but I wanted to know if you guys had any recommendations of which schools on I should get rid of or possibly OOS friendly schools that I should add to my list. I was wondering if applying to 10-12 schools would be enough?

Illinois residency
oGPA: 3.79
sGPA: 3.74
DAT: TS- 22 PAT- 24 AA- 23
150 hours shadowing general dentist
200+ hours research
200+ hours various volunteering

UIC
SIU
Midwestern IL
Michigan
Detroit Mercy
Marquette
Iowa
Pitt
Rutgers
Creighton
VCU
Harvard

Let me know what you guys think. Thanks

your stats are really really good.. I think you'll be fine for the most part. Some might even say you can apply to a lot less, but I personally wouldn't risk applying to less than 10.
I would take out Rutgers though. Out of 1415 OOS applicants, 190 were interviewed and only 30 were accepted. that's a 2% acceptance rate.

I guess I missed that about Rutgers, thanks. Do you know of any other OOS friendly schools I can apply to?

Harvard's class size ~35, you are required to present and defend a thesis to obtain your degree so keep that in mind if you're not sure about continuing research or not.

Here's the list of schools I applied to. These schools have high acceptance rates for OOS, and does not favor bordering states for the most part. Hope this helps

OOS Accepted/Applied (%)

1. UIC (in-state)
2. Midwestern - IL (in-state)
3. SIU (in-state)
4. Marquette (favors IL applicants)
5. Lecom (7.5%)
6. Midwestern- AZ (9.7%)
7. Temple (7.7%)
8. NYU (over 11.5%)
9. Virginia (7.7%)
10. Iowa (9.5%)
11. Case Western (9.6%)
12. Louisville (7.2%)
13. Detroit Mercy (14.3%)
14. New England (9.3%)
15. Michigan (6.3%)
16. Minnesota (12.5%, longest secondary app you'll ever ever ever do)
17. Columbia (7.8%)
18. Penn (N/A, 11% interviewed)
19. Pittsburgh (N/A, 18.7% interviewed)
20. Ohio (8.2%)
21. Tufts (9.8%)
22. USC ( ~5%)
23. Western ( ~5%)
24. Maryland (5% OOS, 10% including neighboring states)
25. Creighton (7%)

I remember reading the Maryland statistics on ADEA and it looked like they did favor the neighboring states quite a bit. A lot of OOS acceptances came from VA, NY, and a few others.

You're right.. about half the seats went to those states. It's probably closer to 5% for the OOS states. Thanks for the info, I completely missed that

I see. And are your pulling the school stats from the ADEA 2014 guide?

I'm using this year's guide. I'm glad I got it, although this online version is really annoying to use. I should have gotten the physical copy 🙁

Thanks for the list Soleus. A lot of those schools are just too expensive so I added just Temple and Case Western to my list.
So right now I have:

UIC
SIU
Midwestern IL
Michigan
Detroit Mercy
Marquette
Iowa
Pitt
Creighton
VCU
Harvard
Temple
Case Western

Harvard=stat match, but kinda research heavy. That what you want to go into?

I heard their residency percentages are higher after graduation? I don't know if that is true. How do we find out about graduates that went into specialties for each school?

Harvard has a high residency acceptance because more students apply for residencies. That is not a reason to apply if that is your end goal. You can get accepted out of any dental school. If you want to go to Harvard and do research, etc. , great, but don't apply if you think it's your only chance to get into a residency.

Exactly. Most people will practice general dentistry and of that I feel like more than half go straight into practice. The only information that would matter is applied/accepted stats for residencies at the school in question. I don't even know if that info is available/exists.

Add Columbia, upenn, UCSF will love the research! Great stats! Good luck!

Thanks for the help. I looked at Columbia and Penn but they are just too expensive for me. Also UCSF is not that OOS friendly.

I'm applying to Midwestern because it is in-state.

If you're from UIC, you have the highest chance of getting into UIC.

I'll second maryland being oos friendly. I was offered an interview, but they wouldn't allow me to reschedule it, so I never went. I would remove rutgers, look into Pitt and Penn, Case, and Louisville. I interviewed at Case, Louisville, UDM, Marquette, OSU, UM. Of which I would say all but OSU was oos friendly, especially UDM, Case, and Louisville.

Isn't it private though?
It is but it is close to home so I am applying out of convenience.

Unfortunately I don't go to UIC.

I removed Rutgers and added Case Western but I'm not feeling Penn and Louisville because they are going to be pretty expensive.

Louisville is cheaper than Case, also a much nicer school from my experience, both were great, just Louisville had everything new. It was the nicest of all the ones I visited.

Be careful when you're looking at prices... I thought going to my state school was cheap vs. other schools since tuition was only 40k a year, but turns out all the costs are about 70k+. Just make sure you look at all costs when comparing schools.
