Need help deciding whether to apply this upcoming cycle

Hi all,

I'm trying to decide if I should apply this upcoming cycle with these stats and experiences below. I'm a little worried if I'll have a good shot.

Current Junior (Class of 2016) from a Top 5 University
GPA: 3.93
MCAT: 31 (12/7/12) -- the low verbal is the one qualm I see with my application, but all advisors recommended not retaking it
Other: URM (Asian and Pacific Islander), first-generation college student, Oregon resident

Clinical Experience:
-2 full-time summers (~1000 hours) at a free clinic working as Lead Medical Scribe, Operations Assistant, Health Education Coordinator, and Student Researcher
-2 years working at my school's student run free clinic
-Hired this year as Clinic Manager of the student run free clinic

Research Experience:
-Microbiology and Immunology research since freshman year of HS (this is my 7th year straight doing research)
-Public health research at free clinic on the ACA/Medicaid expansion
-Planning to do Honors Thesis in Education (focus on patient education)

Teaching/Leadership Experience:
-Lead Tutor in Organic Chemistry on campus
-President and Founder of an ethnic pre-med organization on campus

I think you'll get into great schools looking at your stats. The research is very strong.

Asian is NOT considered URM. What is your state of residence?
Application looks good, except you definitely need some shadowing and volunteering (clinical and non-clinical). Get those done and you should be good!

Everything looks very good...except the VR score. I am wondering if it will get you automatically screened out at some schools. If you would consider retaking the MCAT and improving on VR, you would have a much higher possibility of getting into a MD school. But if you really want to take a shot at applying this year with your current MCAT, then ask your premed advisors if they know of schools that won't screen out a 7 VR. Also, if you have not considered DO, you might want to...unless you have a strong preference for MD.

I think chances will be good, but the 7VR might hurt in places. Invest in MSAR Online and target schools whose median scores are closest to your own, for example, VCU, Tulane, U Miami and Wake Forest.

I have Pacific Islander background as well--isn't that considered URM?

I'm an Oregon resident, so I'm hoping I'll have a good shot at OHSU!
