Hi all?

I have finally narroweed all my options down to 2 fields. However, they both have good programs at a specific hospital that I am interested in. so....

a) CAn i do clerkships in two different fields at the same hospital?

b) can i try to match at the same hospital in two different fileds?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jeff

I remember someone else asking a similar question in one of these forums a while back. I believe the answers to your questions are a) yes, and b) technically yes, but not a good idea.

When program directors interview candidates, one of the things they are looking for is someone who is truly interested in and genuinely commited to their field of choice. I'm sure that many people apply to two different programs within the ERAS system, esp. if one is a very competitive specialty. The problem, however, is that if your two PD's at the same institution find out about your infidelity, it might not look well for you.

From your post you must be a third year? Definately do an elective or two to make sure you're certain what you want to do when you grow up, but remember that the first few months of fourth year are also valuable for securing letters of recommendation from your attendings.

Good luck!

BUMP......

Any other insights would be appreciated
Thanks..

It can be done, depending on a couple of things. If you have a particular reason to want to be in a certain place, they are more understanding about you applying to more than one program. It also depends on what the programs are-if you're applying to two really different programs (say, psychiatry and radiology) they might look differently than if you're applying to OB and family practice, or general surg and ortho. There may be other opinions, but I think you should probably be up front (especially if they ask) since it would look much worse if you lied and then they found out.
