Your state school(s).
Seton Hall if they're taking apps.

1. what does 'non-science lab' mean for your exp? Did you do psy, soc, anthro?
2. for MD-only beware in-state influence for CU and BCM

in terms of finding schools that fit your stats range/state residency, check out
http://www.prospectivedoctor.com/chance-predictor/

And wow, Goro, that is a heck of a list!
That list will almost certainly land you somewhere but those secondary apps will take a lot out of w/e you do this summer.

1. Anthro

2. What are CU and BCM?

1. Awesome! It shows you were interested in research and it is a relatively unique thing to bring to the table.

2. Sorry i'm from Colorado and we always call the University of Colorado 'CU' to not confuse it with the California schools.
BCM is Baylor College of Medicine and I only mentioned it b/c for some reason I read your 'BU' as Baylor University and I figured you were trying to say Baylor. Ignore that, sorry.

As to your chances, you're in a good spot because of your GPA and you hit your other checkmarks pretty well.
You will be just fine as long as you don't overestimate your situation (ie, only apply to top 20). Definitely give it a shot at a few top schools, though!
Personally, I'd say take Goro's list and cut off a few schools where you a. wouldn't want to live there b. just don't really want to go to.

Somebody has to get into those high volume schools. I'll let the applicants decide.

I think Brown too highly favors their own.

The matriculant median for OSU is 34. A 514 is a hair below that. For someone from WV, IN, KY, or MI, I'd consider it a shot. I'm more bullish on someone from so far away. But OSU is more OOS friendly than many state schools.

NYU has a median MCAT of 36 (518), OP, being ~ MCAT 3 points lower than that (on the old scale) again makes me more conservative in choices. Again, that slippery pole analogy.

Seton Hall opens Fall 2018 supposedly and isn't on AMCAS yet.

Do you think George Washington and Tulane are too high volume schools?

Also, do you think Brown, Ohio State, and NYU are unrealistic?

Do you think I should swap out any reaches with any maybes from my current lists? If so, which?
Your reaches and maybes are all reaches for different reasons. It's a matter of personal preference. I'm sure my preferences differ quite a bit!
Don't apply anywhere that will make you will feel like you wasted the $ on the secondary when you don't get an interview.

No to all four. MD is a very difficult state for OOSers. U MI and U VA are the two top public schools outside of CA.

Penn State is quite doable, but I can't recommend a school whose parent organization protected a child molester for > 20 years.

Finally, what is your opinion about UVA, UMich, Penn Stateand Maryland?

Thank you for your input.[/QUOTE]

Do you know anything about and whether I would be competitive there with my current application profile?

A few of the CA candidates we interviewed were also accepted at VA Tech, but they had a somewhat different application profile compared to yours.

Do you think I should apply there or would it essentially be a waste of money?

Keep the NJ schools, Albany, Einstein, Drexel, Temple, Penn St, Jefferson, Tufts and Miami from your "Target" list.

Vermont is fine from the maybe list. From your "target" list, Netter EVMS and probably even Wake are also most likely ok.

If you want a couple reaches, Ohio St, Rochester, Boston U and Emory are probably your best bets. A below average MCAT and a limited science research background dont make these top 20 schools you have listed particularly good choices.

You have about a dozen "target" type schools you can go in saying you have a reasonable shot at getting a II at. For an NJ applicant with a 3.9/33-34, that'll usually get you enough IIs. If you want to add a few more "target" type schools for comfort, Oakland, MCW, SLU and SUNY Downstate are worth a look.
