Hi,
First I want to thank this community for all the knowledge and help!

Here's my case:

-I'm an international student, with a Brazilian 4 year B.A. in advertising.
- I'm 30 years old, and I have a 8 year gap without study after finishing my BA in Brazil (married, worked and became a mother before returning to study and moving to US).
- I'm eligible to become a Permanent resident through family visa (I'm married to an US citizen's son), but will not get in time for Dental School, maybe more 4 or 5 years of waiting.
- I took 1 year of pre-req courses at a Community College, transfered to a 4 year College one year ago and one more year to finish all pre-reqs. But, I will not have a US Bachelor degree in time.
-My GPA it's 3.75 and sGPA of 3.85
-My DAT it's scheduled on early July and I'm planning to apply in early June. Already done my research for schools that accept international students and I plan to have a good DAT grade (+21). If that goes well I plan to apply to at least 15 schools THIS cycle.
-I have 50h shadowing and will do at least 100h before the end of this year. and some volunteer work too.
-I have good letters of recommendations too from my teachers and from Dentists.

My MAIN question:
- Does anybody know of someone that it's an international student and got into Dental School without an US Bachelor (but with a Bachelor from another country + pre-reqs)?

I did my homework and already know all the difficulties of getting in being an international student, but if ONE got in with the same credentials, that would give me a lot of hope. I know a high DAT it's crucial and I will study the next 10 weeks/ 8h a day for it, and I'm confident that I can deliver a +21 DAT. And I'm really good in interviews too. Please everybody that knows something that could help me, I would really appreciate it!

Thanks!
Carol

I am not an international student, but There are some who have made it into a USA dental school right from another country. I remember on my Nova interview, we had a guy from Asia, he was telling us how he took a 20 hour flight 2 days before.... So I know Nova accepts such students.

I also know U of Michigan also accepts a few each year, but I believe you need to have AMAZING stats (high GPA + high DAT)

I used to be an international student about a year ago. it takes about 5-6 to get ur greencard once u apply for ur residency (if married to a US citizen). If you are applying this year, you can always update the school about ur status, if you are applying next year, you dont even need to worry about it, because u will be a resident (no need to be citizen)
ur foreign bachelors degree is not so valuable, US dental schools look more into your US bachelors degree. So if you are applying without ur US Bachelors degree then u better have good stats. Also you dont need to have ur US BS degree when u apply but then want you do have it by the time u enter the dental school, so how many years you have left to receive ur degree here?

If I were you I'd contact all dental schools and ask if they accept international students who went to college overseas because unfortunately some schools may not consider such applicants.

Hi,

My husband it's not an US citizen (he missed the 18y old limit to ask for it, now he's waiting just like me, his father that is US citizen). So, no US citizenship for the next 10years and Greencard will be more 5 years.

I know that they look more into Us bachelors, but can they completely ignore that fact that I already studied 4 years? If I have good stats, all the pre-reqs and more (Calc I and II, OrgC I and II, Genetics, Microbiology, Physics with calc I and II, all basic Bio and Chem etc) with high GPA and high DAT, but without the B.S., applying early, +15 schools do you think I have 0% chance of getting interviews?

To give you some examples, schools like NYU and BU will only consider applicants with a degree from US-accredited schools (Canadian schools included). Columbia requires at least 90 credits at an accredited American institution. US citizen or not, this applies to every applicant.

Why can't you finish up your education in the United States?

It all depends on, when are you receiving your US bachelors degree, and when are you applying to dental school. Almost all US schools want you to have a bachelors degree when you enter, not when u apply.

I know many dental schools that take international students, my sister and brother who are both international students got several interviews and acceptances and they applied one year before they received their bachelors degree.

+1.
this is the best way to go forward.

Thank you for that! That's really good news for me.

to the OP: Schools that accept students without a Bachelors degree are extremely few and in this case almost 99.9% of the time, student is a US citizen or green card holder. Since you are neither, I would strongly suggest getting a Bachelors before you spend so much money applying. I don't know if the schools would even look at your DAT scores and GPA (almost all acceptances come with the stipulation that you will get your Bachelors degree by the time you begin Dental School)...please call the schools individually before you make any concrete plans.

Thanks for the heads up.

For me it's hard to understand that, because the fact is I HAVE A BACHELOR DEGREE from an international accredit college, with the degree translated from WES.org . I understand that some college JUST accept US BACHELOR degree holders (NYU..), but stating that I DON'T have a bachelor, that's not true at all. That's my confusion. I HAVE a Bachelor and I have all pre-reqs and more from US college...

kkk Sorry it's just that some time it's really frustrating! But thanks all for every msg!

Just a quick update of my case.
I just found out that I will be able to get my US Bachelor degree before next cycle. My college is working with me, and because I already have a Bachelor degree from other country I will be able to finish the US bachelor before I was expecting! 😀 I changed my DAT date to July 25th because I felt that I needed a little more time to be ready for it. If I do better than 21+ on the DAT I plan to apply to:

OH- Case Western
NY- SUNY Buffalo
CA - Loma Linda
Upenn
Temple
NYU
Columbia
BU
CA- U Pacific
CA - UCSFrancisco
MI - Michigan
MI - Detroit Mercy

In August I plan to get some good hours of shadowing (maybe 100) and start some community service.
I already have the Committee Letters of Recommendation from my College too.

What do you guys think of my chances?
