Hi - need some help please.
I am a third year resident in internal medicine and I had always wanted to do Med-Peds but missed the cutoff to switch as a first year resident. I am now applying to do pediatrics residency starting july, '06 (right after I finish IM this June). I was wondering if I decide that I don't like Pediatrics and quit after doing 1 yr (I would finish a year and not renew my contract) - would it look bad to any pure internal medicine fellowships (rheum, endo, nephro) I apply to in the future. Thanks very much

I think you have answered your question in your post. If you aren't sure if you are going to like pediatrics, don't start a residency. Apply to a fellowship in medicine.

IM residents at my program sometimes do electives in the children's hospital (eg, future adult cards-bound reisdents rotate through peds cards for a month). You should try to do a peds elective to figure out if you even like peds before wasting a year of your life.

wouldn't quitting any residency prematurely reflect poorly on your commitment to medicine?

I don't think it would be a big deal.......especially if you finish the PGY1 year.
