I will be taking the MCAT in May and applying in June. I need to be a volunteer at a hospital, but all of the hospitals around my home are not in need of any volunteer. Is there anyway that I can have some clinical volunteer experiences beside shadowing doctors?

Consider a free or low-income, family-planning, or private practice clinic, a hospice, VA clinic, residential home, rehabilitation facility, nursing home, or as a first responder like EMT, among others. Hopefully, you have some of these within a reasonable distance. All except the last provide a clinical environment that will give you the necessary experience.

Planned Parenthood is a good place to volunteer.

religious organizations are sure to sponsor some sort of organization in the area that provides clinical care - check with the churches and synagogues (only because of personal experience, check with which roman catholic dioceses you reside in - ours is affiliated with several centers which provide for mothers to be etc. which are surely associated with clinics)

Good luck, OP. It's not easy.

Just had a free clinic refuse me for being a "middle aged, white man". Yes, that's a quote.
Clinic director says it's a liability, for some reason I don't want to give thought to.

Probably smelled "the crazy" on you from a mile away. Still the victim though . . .

Feeling a little territorial over your SP forum, fellas?

Anything positive to add, or just a juvenile smear campaign? No need to spread disagreements around the entire server, is there? Why don't we settle differences where they began, instead of following someone around.

Hospices are pretty good resources, OP. I thought they were only for the desperate, but it's an undeserved label.
Again, good luck.
Let us know what you find.

Folks, please keep in mind that Nontrad is a moderated forum, and comport yourselves accordingly. In addition, please do not be rude by hijacking the OP's thread. S/he posted this thread asking for suggestions concerning places to get clinical experience besides hospitals.

OP, you've gotten several excellent suggestions. Nursing homes in particular are always looking for volunteers; I think you will be welcomed with open arms if you contact a local nursing home and offer to help.

I did the typical ER thing.

If I had it to do all over again, I wish I would have volunteered in a hospice. The need is higher and the experience would be better (I think).

As med students a group of us volunteered at a hospice, and it was extremely touching.

I got a volunteer position in CCE program yesterday.

CCE is recruiting season right now
