Do any of you guys know about the MPH/MBA programs? They look very interesting on paper in terms of what you can do with them. I am in dental school and quite frankly I find myself pretty disenchanted with clinics. If I get into one specialty of my choice that will be cool but otherwise I may have to look into other options and this program looks pretty cool. I might have to take the GMAT but thats ok I guess.
I just want to know if you guys have either done this program or know anyone who did it and what kind of jobs they acquired. Also if it makes a difference if a person has either an MD or a DMD to go along with it.

there were several clinicians in my public health program that were in the Haas/SPH MBA/MPH in health management. Its a top ranked program too.

exmike, what kind of positions were they trying to obtain after graduation? Academic/ hospital, private sector or something else?

people i knew in that program go into private and public sectors, but the majority go into private for obvious reasons. Many go into management position for pharma companies, biotech. many also go on to work for insurance companies and managed care organizations such as Kasier. And boy do they get paid. 🙂

Some also worked for device companies. The possibilities are really endless. However, a large number of students noted often that they felt they had a "moral obligation" to use their MPH along with their management skills to make a positive impact on society. I think thats part the MPH mentality, and part the Berkeley tree hugging mentality.

I am also looking into MPH/MBA programs, although I am not looking into healthcare management specifically. Instead, I am interested in focusing on the public health area of nutrition (hunger/obesity), and integrating management skills with public policy to reverse these trends. Is an MPH or an MBA/MPH more suitable for this line of work?

You may want to consider UNC-Chapel Hill. They have an MPH program that is very similar yet shorter than their MHA program. Most of the classes are the same, but some are more focused on the clinical application of policy making.

In addition, UNC-CH has a Dentral-track MPH program that you may want to research. This may be more suited to your professional goals.
