I have accepted the offer from UDM - very excited about being able to pursue dentistry as a career changer!

Right now, the hard thing is to plan for my future housing while schooling. I am an OOS applicant, so gonna move from PA to MI. I have two kids (one 4-yr old and one 7-month by now). My husband is fortunate to have secured a job offer from Ann Arbor, such that my whole family will move and remain staying together with acceptable commuting distance for both of us.

We are currently looking to rent or buy a town house at a good school district between AA and UDM. Ideally the commute won't be too long/hard for either of us. Any suggestion on the areas for my family to consider is welcome!

We are still hesitating between renting or buying. It seems to be a good timing to buy given that the real estate is recovering and we have a big family (sometimes my parents visit). But I am concerned that I might need to move again in 4-5 yrs if there aren't many job opportunities for dentists in this AA-Detroit area. The property that I own may end up dragging my feet. I am wondering what is the chance of practicing locally when I graduate in 4 yrs. If the chance is very good, then buying a home will be worthwhile in the long run. so how is the demand for dental graduates in the AA-Detroit area? Any information would be very much appreciated.

As you can see, ur best best for a "midway" place is Livonia... Or anything thats near I-96 along that blue line.

Thanks dentalWorks!

I read somewhere in this forum that I-94 is worse than I-96 in terms of traffic during peak hour or under inclement weather. Is that true?

geez, one can acquire 1300sqft over 3 bed and 2 baths for $150k in livonia. i could buy two of those for what i'm paying for mine.

i have no idea what your real estate situation is like in PA, but given that your family will still have taxable income by way of your husband's work, you might want to consider the deduction paying interest on a mortgage can bring.

what i would do if in your shoes: certain only about the next four years of my life, and knowing property there is dirt cheap, i would buy something i could see myself living in for at least four years and finance it with a 15yr note. by the end of Dschool the idea is that you would have built up enough equity to give you options once the time comes for you to make another decision (assuming prop values remain constant).

yeh... the downtown area where I-94 hits is kinda busy between 8 to 8:30 am. but thats not much of a problem....however the way back is another issue.... it does get very backed up between 4:30 - 5:30 pm... I am talking bumper to bumper.

here is an alternative rout if you deicde to stay near i-94:
you got more options now, Remulus, Taylor, Bellevile, etc

Finally I am back - my account was banned for a week b/z my hubby tried to use my account to make comments. Haha, lesson learned.

Ferneezy, I appreciate your input. My husband and I are seriously considering buying a home, in the condition that we could get our house in PA sold first. It depreciated slightly compared to several years ago but hopefully real estate recovery in PA will catch up like in other states soon. I just don't understand why "Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Illinois and Delaware were the only states that showed declines" in home prices in Dec 2012!?
