Hey Guys,

I have a quick question for those who might know a lot about life after med school. I was originally going to finish my masters in biomedical sciences before going to med school next august. I am pretty close to getting an acceptance i think and i am not sure it is worth spending more money and time getting this masters i dont know if i need. Is there any benefit to having a masters for residencies or anything like that? I figure board scores and the do degree are most important, do you think it is worth it to sacrifice this year and some major cash for the masters or is it just another piece of paper to hang in the office? i just thought relaxing this year would help me not to burn out during the next 4.

thanks for your input, its been a hard decision.

Since you seem to be a Jersey girl, can I ask - do you attend UMDNJ in Newark for your Master's?

If you have/almost have an acceptance then you need to make sure the acceptance isn't contingent upon you finishing the degree. Each school has different requirements.

I am having this same dilemma.

Here's one I know: WVSOM acceptance in NOT contingent upon completion of the MS.

yeah, it's in newark. I know a lot of people love it, but I'm bored and hate the place anyways. I love stratford where I'm applying and I just wanna get out of this damn school. I don't think my acceptance is contingent upon the comlpletion cause they didn't even ask me about the masters in my interview. I am more concerned about whether it would be beneficial in the future. What do you think you are going to do?

Well, I am also at the program at UMDNJ in Newark, and I too dislike it immensely. I hate the area and the program. I am, however, going to finish my degree. I want my Master's to be able to teach and do research in a different areas once I am retired or want to mix that in with clinical practices. However, if not for those desires, I would bail. I don't need to go more in debt just to get a degree I don't need/want in an area I dislike. I say don't finish it, but that is my opinion.

My name is Shannon, by the way. If you ever want to get together at school, pm me 🙂.

I'm not really sure what a biomedical sciences MS degree entails...so I have no idea whether it would help you. I am positive, though, that you will be prepared to be a physician regardless of whether you finish or not. If you are interested in research a lot of schools have research programs available so you would get some or more exposure that way. Maybe you could contact some current students at the school and ask what they think? If you are totally miserable in the program you probably aren't getting a lot out of it and should just get out now and have fun before med school. So, I agree with shenningdo, unless you have some particular reason for needing the MS, why bother?

I am getting an chemical engineering master's so I'm pretty sure it won't help me any. 🙄 BUT, I just got accepted to OUCOM (!!!!) and they were kind of pushing me to think about DO/PhD so I I bet I'll be expected to finish the degree.

I was accepted to LECOM while about half way through my masters and they never mentioned whether or not I needed to finish it. The thought of not having to spend a countless number of hours on my thesis was very tempting, but in the end I went ahead and finished.

Being at the point where I am now I'm very glad that I did get my Masters. It my not change my outcome from med school, but it does raise the occasional eyebrow. Plus I got a published paper out of it and a few poster presentations. Very nice on the CV. If the money isn't too much of an issue I'd say it's worth the effort.

good luck

Alright, it's decided. I'm gonna stick it out. Thanks for all the input, it's nice to see some of you are also/have been in the same situation. I also talked to someone else who brought up a good point, that during residency interviews it would not look good to have started something, no matter what it is, and not finished it. That could be a red flag and it's never good to have any red flags. So thanks again, and wish me luck for this year, I just can't wait to get to the school I really wanna be! If I got at least one good thing out of this program it is the realization that I don't want to be in an MD program and the DO path is much better fitting.
