So I've had a pretty rocky journey through undergrad, started off with a ton of AP credits, used it to add on multiple degrees, rather than graduating early with one- bad idea in retrospect, but you can't blame me for trying hard. Anyhow, my current situation is something like this:
My overall GPA is a 3.68, my BCPM is a 3.64ish, AO is a 3.89. I haven't taken the MCAT yet, score >32 on practice tests without having taken physics II and organic II(currently in the said courses)
As far as ECs, I have about three years of research, two pubs, three presentations at conferences, one and a half years of volunteering as an EMS provider, three years of leadership experience (TAing, advising, presidency of a club, etc), non-medical volunteer experience for a 150 hours or so, and membership in random honor societies.
As it stands, I am looking to graduate within the next year, so by next spring, and my GPA at most will hit the 3.7 mark overall, or hover around 3.69, my BCPM close to that number. I will graduate with more than 250 credits, of which 89% or more will be BCPM, and two degrees, in peripherally related (science) majors. Yeah, I know, waay too many courses.
At this point, I am looking to take my MCAT within the next 10 months, and based on my score increases, I believe I can score in the 35+ range, if not higher. Nevertheless, it is still naive to think of this as gospel.
My question at this point is, after getting my MCAT scores, should I apply to both medical schools (allopathic/MD) and SMP programs, so that I have something to do in my year off? I am looking at Tufts, Georgetown and Drexel. If I do end up scoring in the 35+ range, do I have a decent chance at an allopathic acceptance, and if not, will the SMP provide that sufficient boost to send me over the edge to that coveted acceptance letter? Would appreciate thoughts!
