Hello,

I started out at a community college completing my pre-req classes and maintained a gpa ~3.00, during this time I had to work to help support the family and was involved with extracurricular activities such as clubs, hospitals, and teaching. I than moved onto a 4 year university, yet than life got harder with further obligations with work and care-giving so little time remained daily for me to study. I thought my GPA was going to take an upward trend yet it did the opposite, it's been hindered through my first year and half and I am passing my classes but the GPA is around ~2.8 overall right now. I also had two courses in which I got a "D" in the first time but passed while taking it the second time, I know that the AMCAS GPA will count both grades which again reflects negatively on my transcript. I was wondering with all that being said, do I still have a shot at a post-bac?

The reason I predicted my GPA to be higher was I was not taking the courses I had to repeat into account, such as Bio and Math once and how the AMCAS GPA calculates all the courses you took. So here at the numbers from the calculator...

Running overall:2.46
BCPM:2.27

Hey amkakar,

Have you graduated yet?

You can always start your own post-bac by enrolling at a 4-year university/college as a non-degree seeking student and take upper division science courses.

If there is a particular formal program that you're interested in, then you should give them a call and request a phone/office appointment with an adviser. Explain your situation and ask them what it takes to get into their program.

Best of luck to you!

You got a 3.0 at a CC which is far far far below the standard of med school, and a 3.0 is frankly unacceptable.

Your poor cGPA and sGPA make me ask the obvious question - are you sure medicine is right for you? Is something going to be drastically different in terms of your time commits during a post-bac than it was during your past? I just dont see a receipe for success here.

You are substantially below the cGPA avg at MD schools of 3.65, and you took your classes at the lowest academic standard and did poorly.

Also, retaking Ds and getting 'passes' - what does that mean? you got a C? if so, thats not good enough either. Repeating a class means you need to rock it - and if you only got a C thats not rocking it, and you'll have to take it a 3rd time. Another big red flag to me.

Not dream killing but I just want to inject a dose of realism here.
