i volunteer at the hospital 4 hours a week, but it's not very exciting. i hate volunteering there cuz i dont really get to do anything intersting...

my schedule this quarter is really busy. if i include research, i am taking 21 units (most people take 16 units at most). do you think i should stop volunteering there, or atleast volunteer later when i have time (like spring/summer)?

thanks

how many hours of clinical experience do you have already? can you even categorize it as clinical experience, i.e. do you work with patients? if not, i'd say quit and do something else. adcoms will see right through "fluffy" volunteer experiences.

how do u get good clinical experience?

approach nonprofit clinics. they really need help. during undergrad, i worked as a medical asst. at a nonprofit.

how do u guys find these things? i dont have any connections...

i volunteered at this hospital when i was in hs, and it's pretty much the same as it was before... useless and boring as usual.

call around. look up nonprofits in your area. the website for your city's dept. of health should have some listings just cuz they can't be the only safety net. talk to other premeds and see what they're doing. does your school have an alumni office? look for physician alumni. why not start a program at your school that matches up premeds and physician alumni. med schools love ppl who are proactive.

i went to an informational mtg once to volunteer at a hospital and opted out. there were definitely some cool programs though. like holding drug dependent babies, working in the ER, playing with kids.

do you speak any language other than english? one guy in the clinic i worked at volunteers in the front office but is pulled into patient rooms all of the time b/c he's the only cantonese speaker we have.

do what you need to get a respectable amt of clinical hours b/c some apps require that you write down your most significant clinical experience. then i'd quit and do something that you really like.

i suggest that you dont drop the volunteering position until you have secured another one.
