Hi everyone. I am not sure how many people will actually look at this. I am new to this site. I found it about 20 mins ago. I looked at it, really liked it, and made an account. I am looking forward to being here on this site!

Where do I start?? I am still in high school and have big dreams. My dream is to become a doctor and maybe even a Surgeon. To me- those dreams sound like very big dreams. I have wanted to be a doctor ever since I was a little girl. When I was little I loved the outfits (lol I was little) and I think I just thought it looked really cool, when I was a little older I started getting more interested in it and did a little research and started to think I was not good enough or smart enough to become one. So, I put that dream on the back burner. Now, it is all I can think about. I have always gone back in my mind in wanting to do something medical.

Now, I want to learn everything! I am so interested in the anatomy, learning about different diseases, and even watching some Surgeries on youtube. lol I watched an Appendectomy the other day and it was SO awesome!

I am smart but not a brainy-act by any means! I have to study to do good in school and I don't really mind that. It just scares me that I am not someone who is taking TONE of AP classes, in tones of Science programs or like #1 ranked in my graduating class. I am not someone who is going to go to Harvard College or Princeton University.

My dream is to become a Surgeon. I have so many worries though. I feel that I could never tell anyone I want to become a Surgeon. I told my mom that I wanted to become a doctor but she does not know I want to become a Surgeon.

I just don't know if it is possible for me. I don't know if I were to study my butt off and do the absolute best- not sure if my dream would even still be possible.

This is something that I think about every day of my life. A doctor ... a Surgeon... there is nothing else I want to do.

I need some advice! :xf: Thank you!

Start thinking about where you'd like to go to college and what you'd major in. Do some research and find some goo dpre-med programs.

ALWAYS have a backup plan if you decide that medicine isn't for you, or you find that you're not cut out for it.

Thank you very much, Goro!

I have had some significant hurdles myself in the past, I overcame them because I honestly believed I could. Have confidence in yourself, study often, do some great extracurricular activities, and enjoy your studies; practicing those guidelines helps me and I am sure they can help you. I also agree with a previous poster, start looking at some colleges you like and have a back up plan in mind just in case something happens.

Thank you very much! This honestly helps a lot. What type of Doctor are you if you don't mind me asking?

No problem, I am the kind of doctor that is still in school (lol). I am a senior in high school and hope to one day be a primary care physician. For college searching, http://www.collegeboard.org/ is a great resource.

There is nothing wrong with having dreams, finding out how to achieve those and working toward them. I'm not sure why you can't communicate with your mother about your dreams; perhaps you feel she will try and discourage you or won't support you. My father was not supportive of my plans because he felt it would negatively affect my marriage prospects.

Its a long path to becoming a surgeon and you may find other things that interest you along the way. That should be celebrated as evidence of growth and maturation.

Right now your goal should be to get into college and to work hard. All other advice about becoming a surgeon is premature at this point.

My advice to you:

Take business classes, art classes, architecture classes, programming classes - any classes that you find remotely interesting or have never heard of for elective classes. Treat medicine like it is the last thing you would ever want to do. The last thing you want to do is go through 11+ years of schooling only to find out that you don't like what you are doing.

Keep your options open, even if you decide medicine is the only thing you could possibly enjoy doing for the rest of your life, don't limit yourself to surgery. Maybe you would like psychiatry, or EM better, who knows?

I just don't know if it is possible for me. I don't know if I were to study my butt off and do the absolute best- not sure if my dream would even still be possible.

This isn't a reason not to try.

Good luck.

I'm still in high school, so of course I don't have the same experience as a lot of the other folks on this forum. But we are all on the same boat towards medicine. Some are just at the helm of the boat, while others are at the back. We're all helping each other get through this arduous journey towards the mystical land of medicine. That being said, definitely follow your dreams. I'm not just saying that because it's medicine, but whatever it may be. I view my dreams as the end goal. Along the way are small stepping stones. As a high school student, my next step is getting into college.

For you, I'd suggest the same. Look towards colleges to apply to, if you're a junior. If you're a senior, you should definitely have your apps ready and possibly even send out a few to early action or maybe even to an early decision. Then go from there. Don't rush things, but just keep your end goal in mind.

You realize more than half of us jump off your metaphorical boat right?

And that's when they find a different career, or wait for next year's boat. Maybe it would be better if I used a different analogy.

Assume that medicine is North America and we're all Europeans crossing over the Bering Straight. It's a long and arduous task and many fall off the bridge. Those who can't cross it will find a different profession. We're all helping each other across with a rope around our waist. Some fall off and the rope unravels them into a different career. Those that are able to cross over will be in medicine.

Hope that's better.

What about the people that make it there and then find out that Asia is better? (going with your new metaphor)

Shadow....shadow...shadow! The best experience is firsthand. Make sure its something that you actually want to do and could see yourself doing for the rest of your life. Also, don't just limit yourself to the pre-med route; you might find another area just as interesting, i.e. dentistry, podiatry, pharmacy. Surgery is great; if you have a chance to get in the OR, its an incredible experience. Also, you don't have to be "smart" to be a doctor; there are plenty of dumb ones. 🙂 It's all about work ethic and determination. You stated that you have to study to do good; well that is exactly what you would be doing for the next however many years if you choose medicine as your career.

I think College18 can make a better metaphor. Apply yourself!
