Hi guys,

So I applied to a couple master's programs earlier this month and have heard back from three so far. I was accepted at:
Tulane Human Genetics MS
Boston's Medical Sciences MA
accepted but waitlisted at Dartmouth's MPH.

Dartmouth is probably my first choice because I am interested in public health issues, but I have to wait and see if someone will drop. I have already submitted my AMCAS, so I only considered one year programs. Which would you guys choose? My GPA is ok, but MCAT is low (retaking). I pretty much just want to get a health related degree before medical school, because I've been out of school for a couple years.

Thanks for any insight.

MPH won't help strengthen your application. It is nice to have and some schools would look favorably on it but if I were trying to solidfy I'd go with BU's program. If you know your MCAT is your weakness this program might help you strengthen your scores as well (more science based). I am not a fan of genetics so Tulane was out but if you are interested in it, go for it. Additionally what is the time frame you are looking for? Applying next year? UMDNJ has two good programs and so does drexel (although people complain about the video conferencing). Another program I liked was LECOM's but I didn't do much research into it. I liked the classes.

it all depends on your background. if you're like me and need to polish up a spotty gpa, do bu's program. it's pretty well-known and will do the job, if you do well in the program. tulane sounds like it's a traditional masters and it really wont do much to boost your academic history. i think dartm's mph program is only a few years old, i'm not too familiar with it.

Well my GPA is really ok as it is, though not spectacular. I've already taken post-bac classes after college to finish pre-reqs and take some upper level bio. i guess my concern about BU is that most people do the program in 2 years, whereas i want to do it in one. i'd rather not hurt my gpa by trying to cram everything in there if it's really meant to be a two year program. arg - so indecisive!!!

when are you planning on applying? since the application process will probably take 2 years anyway (assuming you are re-taking MCATs in April 2006) -- why not take the full two years at BU and give yourself time to prepare for the MCAT. take your time -- med school isnt going anywhere.
