Hey guys i need help. I am coming into my junior yr and i will be applying to college soon and i want to pursue a career in medicine DO or MD (DO preferably). I have every intention to do so, but in HS my GPA is 3.54 and my science gpa is atleast 3.8. My problem is that i am so horrible at math that it scares me that i may not succeed. i will be in in alg 2 my jr yr and geom my sr yr. and probably hold a C avg. My question is will i be able to succeed in med school and what undergrad degree should i pursue in. if u ppl dont think i can make it and i bet u would be able to tell, so tell me so i can start a different path...
Thanks you all for the help..

Aww, relax. I'm horrible at math. You will only have to take enough math to satisfy whatever degree you pursue and being bad in it won't make any difference. Your science classes in undergrad will only require basic, easy math. Math won't matter I promise. You'll just have to try your best in college to get in and out of your math classes, then it won't matter anymore. Don't let something really dumb and meaningless deter you.

Don't forget physics is a big part of the MCAT and it is also a pre-req for med school. You really need to understand trig to be able to do physics. A good portion of any degree will be spent in basic math and these grades will be calculated into your BCPM GPA. Math is not a lazy man’s subject, it requires work. If you are having trouble with it try and find out why. Are you trying to cram math? Most people need to work problems in math nightly in order to learn it. You have a few years to figure out what's going on and if you do the work you should be able to succeed. There will be much bigger obstacles to overcome before the application nightmare is over. Good luck

I'm average at Math and don't really like it because its time consuming doing all the problems. My best advice is that whatever college/university you attend is see if they have a math tutor or math lab area that can help you. I spent many hours at my college's math lab and the help really eased my frustrations with the class. I also sought my Trig teacher out a lot during her office hours. I learned this from College Algebra where I was a borderline B/C. I did a lot better in Trig, still ended up with a B but at least pride in knowing I did all that I could in that class.

As for degree, (by the way I'm finishing my second year of college here) pick what your interested in or like. Just be sure to do the pre-med reqs along the way. And the shadowing, volunteering, clinical, and or research as well. Don't let your degree plan and or class schedule be too stressful to you because that could deter you from being as successful as you could of been.

If my advice isn't up to par please someone correct me since I'm not too far along in the process.

my two cents: make sure you major (undergraduate) in something you are interested in. If you dont like math (like me) maybe something in the humanities would be more fitting. I am majoring if philosophy, doing the pre-reqs, and loving every minute of my undergrad education.

I don’t mean to scare you but most schools require that you take trigonometry of calculus before you can even touch the physics with labs. If know that you will do poorly in trig. or calc. take one or the other at a community college. Or go to this website and pick the professor that is best for you.

Good luck,

HS has nothing to do w/ med school..geometry-nope. Calculus-just physics but not that involved at least for me.

You're still so young to be worried about all this. Take it easy 🙂 Make the most of your college years and have fun. I did. As for the major---major in what you find most interesting. A few of my friends got into med school w/ a non-science major (History, Music, English) and I was a bio major. Another was a Biochem major....Biology, Biochem, Chem are popular premed majors but if you don't like the subject, don't major in it b/c every premed out there is. Take the pre-reqs and you'll be fine.

Also, if you really want to be a physician, don't let other people tell you can't. It's all about you and your strength/ determination.

Again, you're so young to be thinking of this so just let loose and relax. good luck 👍

This is *****ic....your what 15 16 or 17? Go live a bit. Until then be a kid, then worry about the crap that makes you an adult. Your too young to care now...

My gosh, all these ultra-busy people giving you advice and you react like that? Chill out hun. Stomper has a point; if you want to do med you'll do it and you'll suck it up in your math classes and work hard until you make it happen. If you don't, you'll figure that out soon enough, switch to a different path like half the people do their frosh year and do that.

Man, you should see the PM I got from this little tyke....Its really funny.
I guess the immaturity comes out in the PMs....
I did not attack personally, just stated an opinion....but then again, I guess I deserved being called a ****head, and a ****ing ***** for having an opinion.

My new opinion.....dont go into medicine. You wont be able to handle it. Your probably best suited to be a ditchdigger.

Good luck on your pursuit....I surely hope the attitude that you express now changes as you grow up. You do need to learn a few things in life before you start medical school....like social skills.
BTW....I hardly doubt that youd ever be my supervising Dr. Youve got 2 years of HS left, minimum 4 yr of college, 4 years of med school and 3+ of residency. Thats 13 years before your even an attending. Add a couple more for board certified.
Meanwhile, Ill be an attending in 4.
