Why is medical and dental school separate?

I've researched this myself and have found this to be largely historical in nature. Dentistry and Medicine appeared to start as separate entities at the beginning, and both have remained as such. Do you agree? The question might shift towards - in modern medicine, why is dentistry not a medical specialty? In my mind, it already is - just more highly focused and has its own schooling program. I also think it would hurt dentistry if everyone had to go to medical school, do rotations in hospitals, and then attend residency to learn the dental anatomy and the hand skills. It seems to be a roundabout way of doing the training, and THEN possibly do more training after that to specialize. Anyone else have any thoughts?

What kind of animal would you be in your next life?

What?? How would you answer this? I have some thoughts but I don't know if it's too corny.

Is this for UConn?

They don't ask these questions anymore. I spoke with several other interviewees and none of us were asked this by either team of interviewers.

Well that's good to know. I'm still at least curious about the medicine/dentistry question though.

Every dentist and physician has basic knowlege of the human body, its a prerequisite to being a healthcare professional. However Medicine and Dentistry emphasize different things, and the scope of treatment they can perform are different so it makes sense that they should be separate. In dental school I didn't learn a thing about leg/feet, nor did we go into specifics on how to treat some systemic diseases because that will never be a dentist's focus.
