Disclaimer: I'm posting this under Allo but I'm also highly considering Osteo as well if that makes any difference; this forum just seems to have significantly more activity so I'm wagering more responses if I post here:

In my short time here I've gleaned the impression that LizzyM is a reputable authority when it comes to the process of getting into med school. She noted in one of my threads:

some adcoms seem to like non-medical volunteering rather than a "two-fer" of volunteering in a clinical setting. Bonus points if you work your way into a leadership position in the service organization. Additional bonus points for serving the very poor.

Seems like sound advice so here are my primary candidates for non-medical volunteer opportunities and their associated pro's/con's in accordance with the aforementioned advice:

1. Volunteering at an aviation museum
- Non-profit dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of aviation in Fort Worth, the North Texas region, and around the world.

Pro's:
- I'm a huge aircraft fanboi and I've grown up around planes all my life. Being ex-military also makes me a big fan of military aircraft in particular.
- I'm most interested in this opportunity and would likely do it even if I didn't need an EC for med school application
Con's:
- Doesn't really fit into the "serving the poor" category
- Unsure if it will offer any opportunity for a leadership position
- It's roughly a 45+ minute drive

2. Volunteers of America Texas
- Helping those re-entering society from prison with things such as resumes.

Pro's:
- I'm a big believer in second chances and it seems like a good opportunity to positively impact someone's life, at least in the short term.
- Seems to fit into the "serving the poor" category
Con's:
- 45+ minute drive again
- Not as personally interesting to me as the aviation museum

3. Working at a resale store for a children's charity
- Funds from the store benefit children at or below poverty level

Pro's:
- 5 minute drive
- Good cause, definitely fits the "serving the poor" category
Con's:
- The job itself doesn't seem very interesting to me.

I think this depends on whether you have any prior clinical or non-clinical experience. If you have no "serving the poor" on your resume, i think that the 5 minute drive is impossible to beat (45+ is quite a trek, imho). I would normally say do what interests you, because I genuinely think there's value in that (aviation volunteering). However, I would lean towards the children's charity if I were you (once again, this depends on your past experience). It even could be more interesting than it seems. Good luck.

Well, I have clinical experience but it's really old (IE, 17 years ago as a military combat medic and lab tech) so I'm planning on doing new medical volunteering as well, in addition to the non-medical volunteer hours. My overall game plan is something like this over the next two years before applying:

- 200 hrs of non-medical volunteerism (~ 8 hrs per month)
- 200 hrs of medical volunteerism (~ 8 hrs per month)
- 100 hrs of shadowing

On a side note, I agree about the drive. However, the aviation gig is something I could probably do for a single 8 hour shift so I would only make the drive once per month.

Could you fit both 1 and 3? If it's once a month it'll be easy to fit in and you seem excited about it. Don't let premed ruin you!!!!! But 3 sounds dope and it's super close

That's fantastic, and I think that's a pretty good plan. I imagine you are working or in school full time?

Yes, the proximity is a big draw because that makes it very flexible.

ATM I work full time as the CTO of a software company that I co-founded but TBH I can come and go whenever I please. When I start doing my prereq's in the spring my plan is to hire some additional people (probably one software engineer and one server admin) to take over the bulk of my workload (and reduce my own salary accordingly).

I think it's a great plan. For only 8 hrs a month, I think you should try the 5min drive to see if it's a job you can/want to do. If it's not, do the 45 min drive and see if you enjoy it more. Wish you the best of luck.

I would do the third one just because you could rack up more hours if it is that close because driving gets old fast (trust me). Plus, the cause is very good and I think that admissions committees will see that
