Nothing works better for me than the paralyzing fear of an imminent exam. Which doesn't really kick in until Friday night before a Monday exam. That, and low-level caffeine infusion, 20mg, q2h. Sorry. I got nothing else for ya.

Coffee in the morning and afternoon but cut it off in the evening. Also, you need to try to get adequate sleep each night because sleep deprivation + studying doesn't work for 2 weeks. Try to each decently nutritious meals/snacks every few hours and get up from your chair at least once an hour.

hey whats the reason of not taking coffee in evening and insted taking it in the afternoon......???

Get up from your desk every 45 mins/1 hour and move around. If you are at home you can do stupid stuff like run and jump around for a minute to get your blood moving (bonus: you burn 10 extra calories!).

Also, I've heard that keeping yourself hydrated is a good idea. I tend NOT to drink that much when I'm studying because then all those bathroom trips interrupt my concentration.

I do drink some coffee when I start to feel sleepy, although if I am too tired I'll just go to bed. There's no point in trying to study when you're very tired.

Also, avoid eating big meals, especially if they are mostly carbs. It will make you soooooo sleepy. 😴

Any recommended drinks, alertness aids, etc? I got to be a machine for the next two weeks. What works, what doesn't? Thanks for any advice.

You have 2 weeks. Plenty of time.

Therefore, best "medications" for staying on top of your game:

- exercise every other day
- go out for a fun night or two
- eliminate distractions
- minimum 6 hours of sleep a night
- avoiding the petty confrontations going on among your classmates - they will waste your time

I agree. The paralyzing fear/sense of panic can be helpful if you can focus its energy into studying more. However, I can't always manage to do that until I've had a good hand-wringing session.

Paralyzing fear of Path is good for a few days, but you eventually hit the learned helplessness stage after about 7 days and stop caring.

If you're going 14 days straight through, I recommend having a reliable study buddy that will drag you out of bed in the morning to go study...if you've got 2 or 3 quiet spots, switch them around so you don't gouge your eyes out. Get a nice little rhythm going.

I usually have a 24oz DD coffee (black) with breakfast, and one or 2 diet cokes or a diet rockstar if I'm dying. Plenty of water and no caffeine after 4pm so that I can sleep at night.

Pretty much the only thing that keeps me from hitting snooze for the 3rd time is knowing that my friend is going to yell at me if I'm late. And even at that I'm usually about 15 minutes late anyway.

...and, later, the fear of harming a patient will be even more of an impetus to read, study and keep updated.

You can try to drink some cammomille tea. It's pretty calming and it keeps you alert too. I usually try a combo with tea and coffee.

Yeah...if it's not one thing, its another. I guess I'm a little short-sighted right now, seeing as they don't trust us with other ppl's lives yet. So, exam-related fears are really the driving force, at least for now. I'm sure things'll change once we hit residency.

And chamomile tea puts me right to sleep...but that's probably because I drink it right before I go to sleep....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz 😴

I always thought chamomile was supposed to be soothing, which is why it's not the tea you want to drink to stay awake. Try black or green tea instead.

I guess it depends on the person. I don't think it'll do anything really to keep you awake, but it might not put you to sleep either. Chamomile doesn't make me particularly sleepy, so who knows. It's good stuff if your stomach's upset, so maybe you could drink it then and keep on studying. 🙂

I have both green tea and camomile tea and I drink them both. Camomile tea doesn't have caffeine but the green tea does. However, when I drink camomile tea, I feel more relax and the stuff that I study absorp in better. I feel like I don't need to take as much breaks when I drink camomile tea as compared to green tea. It's probably just a personal preference. What ever float your boat 🙂
