Hello, everybody,

I have no ideas about how to get on the right track of applying medical school. I wish I can have somebody to help me out on some questions.

I finished my bachelor degree in computer science, unfortunately, with low grade 'C+'. After one year work, I figured out that I wanted to be a doctor rather than a computer specialist. In addition, my contract due will be in the coming May so that I would be free to start taking prerequisite courses in full-time. but I don't intend to get a degree.

I wonder what kind of program at the university will be suitable for me to apply. Is there any program for the student who does not intend to a degree program and may take credit courses for future apply?

If I obtain the high grade in prerequisite, will it be applicable or effective for applying medical school? I mean whether or not high prerequisite result would be able to remediate my former undergraduate course work.

Hopefully, my post won't bother your guys much. Thanks for any advice.

as for your degree program I am not sure about that..I think you should be able to just pick and choose the classes you need to take and let it be - there is no reason what you HAVE to complete a degree program (at least I think so??)....Anyway, my 2cents is to try and do as well as you can in the pre-reqs and also get some type of medical experience so you can demonstrate that you do indeed have a true interest. Also doing well on the MCAT is a must. The C+ average will be hard to explain if you don't have good MCAT's and high grades in the pre-reqs....

Many universities offer post-bac programs for students like yourself who already have a BA or BS and just need to take the pre-requisites for medical or other pre-professional schools. They are usually 1-2 years in length and do not grant a degree. Contact a university near you and ask to speak with a pre-med advisor, they should be able to give you more information about what you need to do. As for your GPA, a C+ average would not be good enough for medical schools; you will need to bring it up to over a B average to be competetive, ideally at least a 3.3 overall. You may need to plan on taking extra coursework to give you time to make this possible before you apply. Your GPA's from underrgrad and post-bac will be looked at separately, but if your post-bac work is all or almost all A's this will be looked at favorably by medical schools. You will want to think about why your undergrad GPA is what it is (immaturity, family or personal issues that affected your performance, etc), since you will probably be asked about this when you apply. Also, a high MCAT score will help make up for previous bad grades, and show medical schools that you can handle the academics. Good luck!

Does post-bac program accept this low grade "C+"? I was just trying to contact admission office that they all need 3.0 GPA at least. I was told the post-bac program offered is not a remedial program. Do your guys think any other ways available for being back to the university? applying second bachelor degree? anybody met same circumstance before? appreciated your help!

I was in sort of the same situation as you and I am currently taking prereq's at a college as a non-degree-seeking student. I can take whatever I want, but the drawback is that I can not qualify for financial aid without declaring a major. Thats ok though because I already have enough loans to pay off!! Anyway, all I had to do was apply to the school as non-degree seeking.
