Hi there,

Friday I performed venipuncture with a BD vacutainer eclipse needle. When I pulled the needle out of the patient some blood spat on the ground. When I wanted to throw away the needle, the needle was also displaced and therefore not capped. Because I'm just starting venipuncture I was also nervous and I can't quite remember what I did. I'm afraid I have a needle stick injury but I did not feel a sharp pinch nor blood. I only had a weird feeling on my left index finger (but I'm right handed), but I saw nothing. Now yesterday evening I saw a sort of paper cut on my ring finger (right hand), I was wondering if a needle stick injury could result in a "paper cut". I think I'm just over-stressing but I would like to know what your view is.

SDN is not for medical advice. Every place has policies for these types of situations. Get in touch with your medical school, supervisor, or occupational health staff and follow whatever instructions they give you. Or see your personal medical provider.
