Hi everyone! 🙂

I'm new. Just found this site, and it seems to be very interesting. Quick question. My friend told me about DO schools a few years ago, but I never thought or looked into it until this year...I don't know why. I really like the philosophy of DO schools. So I applied to allopathic schools last year and am reapplying this year to allopathic and osteopathic this year. Do DO schools frown upon this? I'm worried they will think that I'm the "can't get into allo so go the osteo way." Thanks.

They won't know unless you tell them. Most of them would like to ask you at the interview (or even on secondary) where you applied to. I have told them that I applied to both type of schools, and I still got accepted to DO schools. If you don't want to tell them, that's fine too.

Thanks. I know they'll probably ask me why DO instead of MD, but will they really drill you on how well you understand the DO philosophy? I mean, I have a general understanding but more than that....uh. May I ask where you're attending and do you enjoy the school?

Yes? You called?

I don't think they have grilled me about DO philosophy. They wanted to know why I chose DO, and present them with what my understanding of DO meant to them.

I am currently not attending any school since I defered my acceptance. I had to finish my Ph.D and it has taken longer than I anticipated originally. I was accepted to CCOM and Western/COMP last cycle.

I really don't think there is that much "philosophy" per se. On our first day of OMM we had a little lecture on the personal history of A.T. Still, but a lot of that was just so we could know our roots. Whatever you read in brochures and on the first page of the AOA website is pretty much all there is, as far as an overall guiding "philosophy" is concerned. The real distinction will come when you are actually in OMM class, which they can't expect you to know before you go.

If you have D.O. interviewers, you can ask them if they do any OMM, what do they do, etc... If you have Ph.D. interviewers, chances are they won't even know or care what OMM is, so have some other questions prepared. I think I tried to sound smart and asked a biochem professor who was interviewing me how he worked the osteopathic principles into his biochem lectures and he just looked at me like I was an idiot... which was, in retrospect, quite fair!

Just make sure that if you are asked in the interview, that you tell the truth. Big brother could always be watching, and beyond that--it is bad karma to start your professional career off with a lie.

i'm applying to allopathic schools, too, and am really not sure whether i'm going to opt for an m.d. or d.o. in the end. i'm planning on telling the schools that i'm interested in finding a school that's the best fit for me in that it's receptive to people with different life experiences and that it has a strong emphasis on primary care. d.o. schools seem great because they fit both categories, but i'm not going to rule out an m.d. program that might fit, too. also, i don't know whether to bring it up or not, but my state only has an m.d. program, and i'm not going to just not apply to the one school where i'm instate (even though i live in sort of a cr@ppy state for med school acceptance).

It depends on the school and the interviewer I guess. I know that KCOM likes to ask you to provide the 4 tenets of the osteopathic philosophy. But then again, they are the founding school. 🙂

Yeah what she said...... 😀
I don't know that I agree, and there are certain things that just are not the business of others. A good answer to these types of questions is "I want to help people, and when I am presented with the opportunity to do so as a physician, I am of the view that the letters after my name will not be as important as the goodness in my heart." 😉 :wow:

Thank you everyone for your replys.

atrovariousg: Hm...your answer is quite witty 🙂

topworm: Thanks...I will definitely keep this in mind.
