Negative MSPE comment

Hey yall,

I just got my MSPE back and received a negative comment on my preclinical doctoring course in MS2.

The comment reads that I had "poor organization on a macro level, submitting some assignments late and not always coming prepared (IE: missing pen, stethoscope). (student's name) and I talked about different strategies to stay on top of tasks and responsibilities."

I have reached out to my school admin to get this comment edited or possibly removed, but haven't heard back yet.

I'm a little worried on how this would affect me and wanted to get some advice.

It's super strange your school would include this comment, hopefully they'll be willing to remove it. MSPE's are often glowing and we need to read between the lines to find the true meaning, so a comment like this will stand out

Agree above that I'd ask your school to remove it.

This is why being a med student is so frustrating. As a resident now I show up more unprepared than I ever was as a med student yet workday goes smoother.

Haven't heard back yet but it looks I can't get it removed based on what I'm hearing from my peers. Would this be something that could preclude me from interviews?

What are you applying to and what kind of applicant are you? What type of program you shooting for?

Will this preclude a 250 Step 2 from FM interviews? Absolutely not. Will this preclude a 240 Step 2 from an ortho interview they would have otherwise gotten? Maaaayyyyybbbbbbeeeeee

Im applying anesthesia with a step2 of 242, average ECs, 1pub, research in anethesia currently working in a QI paper, strong LORs, USMD

Ugh ok the caveat is I am IM and interview for IM so take this with a gigantic grain of salt but:

I would apply much more broadly given that MSPE comment and attend more interviews given how competitive anesthesia is right now. I'd be worried the comment of poor organization may make an anesthesia PD particularly uneasy

I’m psych but served on residency selection committees at two different academic programs. I rarely paid attention to pre-clinical comments unless there were other red flags or concerning comments in from clinical rotations. I think that overall it’s a pretty minor issue.

Such a dumb thing to put in a report of any kind, especially considering most med students don't have a ton of professional experience and deserve some leeway in this kind of thing. I doubt that'll be a problem and if it is, I wouldn't want to be at the program that would whip you for forgetting a pen.

The inclusion of this comment will telegraph that your MSPE is not merely sanitized BS (like 99.8% of them). It also provides a concrete example of you being teachable. I wouldn’t worry about it.

Still follow up with admins. IIRC, at my school, we were allowed to pick one comment from our MSPE we wanted removed.
