Just hoping someone knows a bit about how second contracts (renewal/re-signing after the end of first contract) works...

How do these usually go if you're negotiating with a hospital (not a physician group)? Will they usually keep you at your current salary or is the expectation that it will increase (or decrease)? Do you usually get a signing bonus for your second contract like you might get with your first?

there's no usual, as all sorts of salary structures are out there. Doubt you'll get another signing bonus, but every situation is different. bottom line, it depends upon your value to the hospital system. don't expect to be offered more money, but definitely ask. if you bring in lots of money, you have more leverage. if you're in an in-demand, low-supply specialty (like neurosurgery), you've got more leverage. if you're a leading academic with lots of federal grants and a productive lab... you get the idea.
