I had to check the Blue Histology website (
http://www.lab.anhb.uwa.edu.au/mb140/corepages/urinary/urinary.htm), but here how it goes:
- Glomerulus: Simple squamous, for outer part of Bowman's capsule
- PCT: Simple cuboidal, with 3 features: (1) Apical brush border, (2) acidophilic (because of high number of mitochondria), and (3) Extensive interdigitated cell membrane between epithelial cells
- Thick descending segment of LoH: Simple cuboidal (~PCT)
- Thin descending segment & thin ascending segment of LoH: Simple squamous
- Thick ascending segment (TAL): Simple cuboidal (~DCT)
- DCT: Simple cuboidal; no brush border, less acidophilic, but still has interdigitated cell membrane
- MD and JGA: MD: Tall, columnar cells with elongated nuclei appearing as a dense spot (macula densa); JGA: Modified smooth muscle cells of afferent arteriole, containing secretory renin granules
- Collecting ducts: Simple cuboidal without specializations of collecting tubules.
