Do any of you have a table, chart, etc that has a good and relatively thorough summary of the functions of the various portions of the nephron? A website that has the same?

My renal phys prof has given us this info in such a disjointed manner that I'm having trouble putting it all together. I've looked for something online with no luck as of yet.

Any help would be appreciated! 🙂

The book "First Aid For The USMLE Step 1" has a good diagram in its pharmacology section that shows the sites of action of different diuretics and hormones and the particular ion channels that they target in the nephron. Not sure if this is specifically what you are looking for, but I found it to be a useful summary in a clinical sense.

in the earliy chapters of "clinical phsiology made ridiculously simple" there is a nice diagram of transport mechanisms, hormonal influences, osmolality, etc...at least i am pretty sure it is there. also, there are a few good diagrams in the small book, "the color atlas of pathophysiology". at least i think that is the title. this book has a nice set up, one page of diagrams for one page of text, and the renal section is good stuff.

sorry about being so vague, but this is from memory, as i am in an internt cafe, far from my books now. let me know if you need more specifics, and i will be happy to get the info next time i sign on!

hello DrMom, what are you having difficulties with regarding the kidney?

Acid/Base Metabolism Made Ridiculously Simple was GREAT for understanding the kidney. Goes through everything you could ever want to know in easy to understand and remember ways. Also, its pretty small (about 100 little pages), so you can get through it quickly. Good Luck!

Good question. I have realized that my first post was a bit general.

I'm wanting a chart or diagram showing various processes (ie: transport of Na, K, Cl, PO4, Ca, Mg, etc, H2O, hormone action, transport mechanisms, diruetics...) in the various portions of the nephron (Bowman's, PCT, PST, tDLH, tALH, TAL, DCT, CNT, ICT, CCT, OMCD, IMCD).

As I said, all of this has been presented to me, but in a disjointed fashion (each lecture basically went over one or two aspects (ie: ions) through the entire nephron). I do best seeing all of this info together so I'm trying to build a table compiling all of this info, but I wanted to see if any of you already had done so. No need to re-invent the wheel! 😉

I appreciate all suggestions thus far. I'll be checking into those books. 🙂 Thanks!

Renal Physiology by Vander is one of the best textbooks, on any subject, that I've ever read.

BRS phys has a great summary of renal phys. For an indepth understanding I highly recommend the Guyton and Hall textbook sections on renal phys. The diagram in the Pharmacology section of First Aid is awesome as well.
