Hi, here is a ques in which I do not really understand how to do.

Sodium Sulfate reacts with Barium Iodide, What is the Net Ionic Equation.

If you can please show me step by step how to do it that would be great because I do not know how to approach net ionic equations.

Thank you!!!!!

This is a double displacement reaction, so first figure out your overall equation, making sure everything is balanced...

Na2SO4 + BaI2 --> 2NaI + BaSO4

Now just separate everything into their ions, but note that according to solubility rules, BaSO4 is an insoluble precipitate that will not dissociate.

(2Na^+) + (SO4^2-) + (Ba^2+) + (2I^-) --> (2Na^+) + (2I^-) + BaSO4 (solid)

Cross out ions that are seen on both sides- these are "spectator ions" that are not participating in the overall reaction. You are left with the net ionic equation:

(SO4^2-) + (Ba^2+) --> BaSO4 (s)
