I am a third year foreign medical student. I want to do elective in neurology next year . should I apply for research elective or clinical elective ? which one of these is more important as far as application for residencies is concerned ? which hospitals do accept foreign medical students for neuro electives without step 1 score ?

Well, it depends. If you want to improve your research portfolio, then go for the research elective. If you are worried that programs will not be sufficiently impressed by your clinical performance, then go for the clinical elective. Speaking from my experience with my institution, a clinical elective will give you exposure to more attendings and residents. If you give a good impression, a clinical elective should provide a better chance of being offered a position at that particular institution. Remember, a resident is recruited to perform a clinical job. Proving you can serve in this capacity will set a PD's mind at ease more than a publication you got from a research elective.
