Does anyone know the primary reason why the General Neurology match was moved to the NRMP? I take it that neurology used to be really competitive, and so was early match, why the move to regular match though? to get more neuro-applicants? I guess as a plus it gives everyone more time to entertain the possibility of doing neurology.

The old thought was that people didn't know what they wanted to do by the end of med school. Since neuro doesn't start until PGY2, people can get in later. It was early so PGY-1's could try to match and if they didn't then go the back up route and do regular match. That's something my clerkship director told me.

I also heard on the interview trail that one of the reasons was to allow a couples match, which was not possible between a NRMP applicant and an sanfran match applicant.
