neurotransmitter synthesis

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
so is neurotransmitter a protein??? just like hormones, enzymes etc??? how is it synthesized?

some neurotransmitters are amino acid derivatives.
for example.. dopamine is a derivative of the a.a. tyrosine.
gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is another neurotransmitter.

Other neurotransmitters are peptides like NPY (neuro peptide Y)

Acetylcholine is an ester of acetic acid and choline

I believe that hormones are synthesized by the endoplasmic reticulum as well as modified by the golgi complex
