hey guys so I'm applying this cycle and I already have a lower end application (3.6 gpa..2.9 science..32 MCAT)..and I was wondering will I be hindered over the fact I never had a paying job? I researched for 3 months and volunetteer/shadowed but never had a actual job...any input would be appreciated..also any possible jobs I can get over the summer will be awesome too while doing research/classes

Having a job is the least of your worries that science gpa is very low.

Yeah your GPA is a bigger problem than not having a job (which isn't a problem anyway). The 2.9 will get you screened out of many MD schools.

+1

Congrats in the 32 though. That must have been difficult to get with a sGPA that low.

yeah I got boned freshmen year and early sophomore year in the 5 credit science classes....I aced advanced 3 credit classes though

To answer your question specifically about never having a job; as long as you have substantial experiences, and it doesn't look like you were sitting on your butt for all of college, having a job or not is not particularly important.

That said, everyone else in this thread is right about the sGPA.

Schools won't look at your courses or your trend if you are automatically screened out by a computer due to the GPA. I don't mean to be harsh, and I'm not saying that it will be completely impossible, but it's not going to be a fun cycle with that GPA.

The reason why sGPA is so important is that in medical school you will be taking tons of science classes and medical schools predict your ability to succeed based on previous experiences. Yours looks like it is lacking.

It sounds like you have only taken a few science courses so I recommend taking more before applying. The sGPA will get you rejected by the auto screen at a few schools before a person ever looks at your application.

I wouldn't worry about not having a job, you are probably not the only one that has had family support while they beefed up their application. Just be prepared to have to hear a lot of lectures about "how life experience is so important" from other people... smile and nod... like others have said... your science GPA is going to hinder you considerably.

Survivor DO

Save yourself a hassle, apply to 5-10 DO schools. Do not apply to just MDs

Doesn't matter. Your sGPA is too low. Retake any C-'s or lower.
