New ABP extortion scheme

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have been suspecting that, at some point, someone (government, insurance companies, hospitals, etc.) would start giving lifetime certificate holders some kind of incentive to participate in MOC.

If I had a lifetime certificate, there is almost no way you could get me to sign up for MOC, a 0.5% increase from CMS certainly wouldn't do it.

In fact, I am willing to take a 0.5% cut in Medicare reimbursement if I can get my time limited certificate transfered to a lifetime certificate.

I certainly woudn't either, BUT this will also certainly even create more discord amongst pathologists, even among some groups.

Keep in mind that 0.5% bonus is a percentage of revenue and consists of a much greater portion of profit (earnings per pathologist).

Haha. I agree. Well said.

So no reason for those of us who don't bill (not sure if that includes anyone other than us FPs) to participate in this PITA little plan, right?

Almost every state is already requiring MOC participation for getting a state license. You have to have "passed a recertification exam within the past 10 years". If you are older and trying to get a new state license, welcome to MOC.

Sure, sure. But I think it's possible that other, more significant incentives/pressures may take shape in the not too distant future.

Apparently there are also more significant penalties for NOT doing this. And don't forget the rounds of cuts. The 0.5% is just a way to get a fraction of it back, and only for certain cases, of course you have to pay ABP in order to do it. It amounts to basically a tax on doing business involving those particular specimens, with a minor loophole. It would be laughably absurd if it wasn't for real.

Yes, like malpractice insurance premiums.

i did the 10 year voluntary recert crap in 2007 but i am now so disgusted i can't wait to bail--20 more "work" days and i am out of the asylum.
and you are absolutely correct. the unlimited certs will not fly any more.
