Hello all, I'm currently doing a hemepath fellowship and have an upcoming surgical pathology fellowship lined up, which means I'm in the process of looking for jobs. I'm largely limited by my visa status (J1, sadly) and I'm just wondering if there are any pathologists out there with a similar trajectory that can comment on their personal experience out in the work environment.

Ideally, I would like to have a good case volume and at least a few other colleagues to show cases to. Any opinions of what a good practice size/ case volume should be starting out? As a J1 applicant, I'm well aware we don't get to choose our ideal place, but I want to have a better understanding of what "sounds like a good idea" and what actually "is a good idea".

Thanks!

You'll be lucky to land ANY job.
There should be a position where: 1) state will give waivers to specialists 2) competition for Conrad in this state is low, so you'll stand a chance among other specialists 3) you'll sign a contract in time to start all the paperwork and finish it before the deadline in particular state 4) job location is at MUA 5) employer is ready to accommodate your status with an associated costs and paperwork.
With all of that being said I couldn't imagine you will have few offers.

Try to get a spot at VA, there are no deadlines and limits, but the processing times will be extremely long though.

If you can go back to your home country, than spending two years there and applying for PR through EB1 with a reliable lawyer is not a bad idea either.
