I am feeling very confused about how the application process works. Maybe someone on here can lend their guidence. I am a non traditional student and I am currently empoyed at Johns Hopkins as a Research coordinator, I have about 2 publications out of Hopkins and aided in 2 papers out of NIMH, I also work part time at University of Maryland, on the adult and Psychiatric unit. I am a bit concerned about the application process because my GPA is about a 2.7. Honestly what are my chances. In addition to taking medical school pre-requisites I also took some Masters class. I hae not taken the MCAT yet but I am shooting for a mid 30.
HELP! Do I have any chance of getting into medical school or DO school? Where should I put my focus

You need to get that GPA up. No amount of research or clinical experience can make up for that low of a GPA. I would suggest looking into SMPs and post-bacc programs in order to raise that GPA above 3.0 at least. Even then, you're still going to need to rock the MCAT to make up for the low GPA. It sounds like you've got quite an impressive set of extracurriculars, so I think that you can make it with a higher GPA and a good MCAT.

Will Medical schools really not consider me for .3 off my GPA. I have already taken some Post bac classes. However, it is difficult because I work full time and I only have about 3 more credits that I need to take in order to complete the pre-reqs

Take a look: http://aamc.org/data/facts/2008/mcatgpa-grid-3yrs-app-accpt.htm

Applicants with a 3.0-3.2 have a 21.4% acceptance rate. Applicants with a 2.6-2.8 have a 11.4% acceptance rate.

The average applicant's GPA is a 3.50. Your GPA is 0.8 points lower than average. That's a huge difference. The average matriculant has a 3.66.

i would argue that 0.3 off your GPA is actually a pretty big difference. i would definitely consider SMP.

i love that this table is becoming so famous now 🙂

I know this is not the necessarily the correct thread, but what are the chances for DO school or schools in the Caribbean? Thoughts?

i'd still suggest doing something to boost your GPA for DO schools, and obviously you should rock the MCAT regardless. but your chances are much better there. as far as caribbean schools... i'm not really sure about their averages and stuff, but i would guess your shot would be EVEN better there than at DO schools.

What is you are from an underrepresented minority group, what if any does that role play?
