new dental school opening?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
the OOS "leftovers" will attend lecom to become a dentist - not to get the hell out of wherever they're from.

By the content of this thread it seems accurate to say that most predents believe that there is a major bubble and in the free market (without proping up wages by limiting supply) dentists are not worth their current rate.

This thread has the same entitlement of a public union.

Predents: We need to stop opening schools up.
Joe public: Why?
Predents: So we can continue to charge the highest rates possible for our work
Joe public: ....

I am opposed to a new school in FL because more than likely, most of its graduates will stay in the greater Tampa area or somewhere else on the coast of Florida. There are a ton of dentists already in these markets, thus it will only contribute to the problem FL dentistry already has...not enough dentists in non-coastal areas.

Also, I don't think it's wrong to want to protect/be concerned about your future career and career income. After all, money should be a serious consideration and if you think it's not, you are only lying to yourself.

LECOM is a school based up North that opened a school in Bradenton just to make more money. The Bradenton LECOM DO school has been very successful, however there are legit concerns about how this new dental school is going to impact FL dentistry and how its going to provide quality education...

In my opinion you are making to many assumptions on what LECOM graduates will do after they graduate. Not everyone like Florida weather like me and you do.

Agreed. I think 50% go back to their home state and 50% stay around the area. I know I wouldn't ever stick around Cali, New York, Vegas, etc. if I had to go to school there

Thanks for the info and clarification. It sounds like it will be run just like ASDOH's 3-4 year rotations. Will the clinics be predominantly in the midwest or all over the US like ASDOH?

Do you know if they will have the modular system and have the MPH option as well?

It's a bit different than the 4th year rotations (we're on campus in mesa for 3rd year). From what I understand the clinics are going to be in the Midwest in Missouri and neighboring states, so not all over. The MPH will probably be offered since its through the school of health management and is 80% distance learning.

Also, I heard that the class size is going to be small, like 40 students. There even was mention of the first class receiving full scholarships for the first years tuition. Not everything is finalized yet though, so this is just what I was told

On a side note we're also getting a maxillofacial prosthodontic fellowship on campus in Mesa since the new MD Anderson cancer center is opening up down the street w/ Banner.

Alot of you are VERY misinformed on LECOM.....For one they opened up a medical school in Florida because of the virtual non existence of them on the West Coast.

How is that school doing? # 1 Board pass rates (100 %) for the last two years. I'd call that pretty impressive.

How does their other school do? The one in Erie is just as impressive having a board pass rate of 96 %.

How will their dental school do? Probably pretty well. LECOM is one of the most up and coming medical institutions in the nation. Also, they're opening 2 dental schools, one in Erie, and one in Bradenton.

Hopefully you all do research on the school before you make blind assumptions based on your cousins sisters uncles nephews 2nd wifes son in law that goes to LECOM.
