I propose that we create another dental degree, the DDO.

Why?

To distinguish traditional dental school grads with the new grads from the new schools.

Because of all the newly created dental schools being affliated with osteopathic medical schools. To the detriment of the profession, the ADA is allowing these non-research trade schools to open dental schools. I think this will hurt our profession in the long run.

We have lost prestigous schools such as Northwestern, WashU, Georgetown, Emory and they have been replaced by AT Sill, Midwestern, Lake Erie, Roseman, Western, Nova Southeastern, New England.

What do you think? There have been articles in dental trade journals addressing this issue.

DDS, DMD, and DDO!

Segmentation within the profession sounds like a great idea.

I think you posted in the wrong forum. This is a "Pre-dental" forum.
Basically, you're whining about how the new grads will have an easier time than you traditional grads, and the new grads need to be placed in a lower-tier degree, in order to help you traditional grads "shine", relatively.
No pre-dent will agree with this unless they know that this won't be established until after they receive their "DDS" or "DMD" degree.

That has to be one of the dumbest things I have ever heard.

Wow....you should never be able to post again..

I doubt your a dentist. I am guessing you are some troll who failed to get into dental, pharm, osteopathic, or allopathic medicine. Basically, someone who just couldn't crack it at anything.

Considering Dental school is right now the most competitive level it has ever been at I don't think you need to demean people who go these schools.

Just because you are a failure in life and failed to reach your goals doesn't give you the right to put down the achievements of others.

Good Day

So are you saying that a licensed physician who has a DO degree is not fit to practice medicine?

Not really understanding your logic.

Mr. Dr.63A, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no DMD or DDS, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Haha wow, nice one!

any references to dental trade journals on this issue? I would love to talk about it during my interviews.

Keep it civil guys, debate away, but there's certainly no need to attack the OP personally. And this is regardless of whether or not he's joking or seriously asking for discussion.

I don't agree, all dental schools new and old are accredited by the same body, and all dentists have to pass the same boards. I also don't see how new schools with the same degrees will hurt the profession.

I would also be interested to see those articles.

I don't give a $**t what you call me, DDO, DMD,DDS, ADD,ADHD, as long as I am a practicing dentist i couldn't careless. Go ask joe public what the difference between DMD and DDS is..... They are not going to care if you are called DDO. Well SDN I hope to be part of the class of 2016 DDO program from ITT tech! I was watching Jerry springer and saw I could become a dentist in just 9 months lol. What a joke....DDO lol

I do think we need to set limits. We should become a more competitive and ranked society. Competition breeds progress and success.

I don't know if having another degree is what should happen..

PharmD is dead thanks to 6 schools per state and counting. Can't let that happen to dentistry right?

Get into dental school first, then talk. Haters, gonna hate. What Dentist is gonna go onto a pre-dental board and just troll with ******ed comments. Nice one bro. Get in first, then talk.

+1

More schools will continue to spring up though...until students decide its not worth the current price tag...which may be never.

How about this

You have to post your degree
Your DAT score
height and weight
and a picture of your prom date.
and if you used URM status to get in or were a legacy.

Then you can put dmd after your name. I don't mind more dental schools popping up. We have a shortage of dentists. That is why dentists right now are so highly paid. We have to have some balance. Every pharmacist i know right now is making 6 figures...Pharmacy hasn't quite become law school. Honestly, it just matters what school you went to. Obviously, highly ranked pharmacy schools will produce very talented pharmacists who will have no issues finding jobs.

Also quick side note. Pre-dents, Dentists, normal people. Respect other people's talent and degrees. More and more often we are starting to sound like pre-med people. Considering some of us wouldn't be alive without of previous pharmacists, would likely not be able to experience amazing music and art without great artists, and would be living in mudhuts without engineers we should appreciate everyone for what they do.

Thumbs up to appreciating everyone. Who wants to start a troupe of nomadic hippy dentists?

Last time I checked, we all have to pass boards, even Howard and Meharry who let in applicants with traditionally low stats. Why would osteopathic schools be any different? Either you're competent, or you're not.
