Hello everyone,

This is my first post on here and I just had a (hopefully) quick question.

First, I am 29 years old and currently attending a CC. I am taking my pre requisites right now so that I can transfer hopefully soon to a university.

My question is, I have been reading a lot about how med schools will not necessarily even consider the classes that you took at a CC due to the level of intensity that they are at compared to a University.
So, with that being said, my counseler has advised me that I must take 2 more Chemistry classes and my Biology classes before I am eligible for a transfer (along with Calculus, Physics, etc.).
Will I then take these classes again but at a more advanced level once I transfer? I know that most med schools require you to take your Chemistry, Physics, Biology etc. before you are eligible to apply, but my counseler seems to be having me take these all now at the CC before I transfer. If that is the case, what will I take when I actually do transfer? I feel like this may lead me into being set up for failure. 🙁

Thank you all for any comments/suggestions you may have!

You definitely need to attend a four year school before you can gain acceptance to a medical school. As such, the fact that you need to take a lot of your pre-requisites to transfer to a four year school is already determined for you so don't worry about it. Med schools most definitely take your CC coursework under consideration in the larger context of your academic record.

What you need to do is take some of the upper-division science classes once you make it to University. This will be a lot easier if you have a science major because upper-division science coursework is required. I wouldn't recommend upper division physics if you don't need it, but you will have to take o-chem. Upper division bio courses and stats will help you as well. Definitely DO NOT RETAKE your pre-requisite courses if you pass them with good grades. This serves no valid purpose and will only perplex the person reading your application.

You are in no way set up for failure. The community college system is a totally legit way to get into a four year school and you shouldn't even worry about it as long as you remain at your high level of performance when you reach University.

:luck:

Thank you very much for the feedback! I am currently trying to transfer in as a junior as a biological science major (not sure which type specifically yet) and I was just a little concerned. Your response definitely gave me more of a positive outlook!

I think what's frowned upon is taking only your pre-reqs at a CC while pursuing your degree at a 4 year. This might be looked on as an attempt to inflate your BPCM by not taking the courses at a more rigorous institution.

In your case, you're on the non-trad CC to 4 year path. Take what you need to take to transfer correctly and then complete your upper divisions handily. Good luck.
