Hi, I am currently 22 and I will be graduating UCLA with a BA degree in International Development Studies this June. However, my plan is to go back to a community college to pick up some science classes needed to apply for dental schools (which has nothing to do with my current major). I did not decide to pursue in this field until very recently. I am wondering what types of programs I should take in order to be able to qualify for dental school? I looked up the UCLA Dental School and I found this

http://www.dentistry.ucla.edu/admissions/index.asp?id=345#requirements

I know the requirement is listed but I am uncertain of where/how I should approach to satisfy them. I also looked up some programs offered by Cypress College and Cerritos College, which offers Dental Hygiene Programs. Does those help? I am lost and your help is greatly appreciated! Please help me out, thanks.

If you want to become a dentist then no you should not do a dental hygiene program.

Your bachelor's degree does not matter. It could be in anything as long as your grades are high and your admissions test score. You need to take the pre-reqs and do good in them. Also there are recommended upper level biology courses. Take 2-3 of those. They are recommended but not required.

You posted a link to requirements. Different schools have different requirements. All require general chemistry, biology, organic, physics, etc. There are small variations in this. Find a school you want to do the pre-reqs at and take their general chemistry, biology, etc. classes with a lab. If you are still not sure call and make an appointment with a counselor.

School prefer you take the classes at universities and not community colleges. Some will not even accept community college courses.

Thanks, this is very helpful. So I just have to complete a DH program and do some volunteer/shadowing to gain experience before I apply.

I was looking at these earlier

Ohhh, I see. So how do I find out what schools offer the pre-reqs I need for the dental schools that i wanted to apply?

All schools offer general chemistry, biology, etc. Pick a school that you like. Just keep in mind dental schools prefer universities and not community colleges. You can go to your state university.

You posted a UCLA link, so I assume you are from california. Search this forum for people who live in california and where they go. See this thread for example http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=575529&highlight=california+undergrad

Ok, so i just read some of the thoughts on what school to approach from the thread. However, am I able to attend a CSU even after I graduated UCLA wid a BA degree in a non-related major? (go to a community college then transfer again? I dont think you can do that..😵') Since you said dschool are more concern with university courses. Does that mean I need to get another BA degree? Or do I just satisfy the science classes then apply? I am lost..x.x' What I don't get is that you said a BA doesn't matter as long as I satisfy all my pre-req. So do I just do the pre-req requirement without the need to get any sort of degree when I apply?

You need a 4 yr bachelor's to apply to dental school. Most will not accept you without one. It does not matter what you major in.

The pre-reqs should be taken at a university and no you don't need another bachelor's degree, if you have one already. Just finish the pre-reqs.

I would assume you can go to any school you like. Why would you not be able to?

Arrange a meeting with a pre-health/dental advisor at one of the schools to help you out.
