  1. Pre-Dental
Hi everyone!

I graduated with a 2.92 GPA due to a terrible start during my undergrad. Picked up a few Fs during the first year due to drug addiction. There is a significant uphill pattern in my academic progress but I know this GPA is not good enough. For this reason, started looking at many different SMPs and came across the Southern California University of Health Sciences MSMS program that was right next door from my current location. I was accepted, a few months ago, to a new program that was officially regionally recognized last year. The program has no record besides the one year and one student out of 2 got accepted into a dental program. The curriculum is very science-heavy since it's an MSMS program and you can find the full list attached. I'm very worried that this program is way too young to replicate success. Would it be better to take some of the courses on this list at community college and save money? Is it better to wait a year and apply to more recognized master's programs? Any insight and recommendations are appreciated.

It's tricky. I definitely see your point in wanting to potentially wait to apply to a more established program. However, I think your best bet is to contact schools you are interested in and asking them, since they will be reviewing your file. You are taking some of the same classes I took in my post-bacc, and I also took some CC courses. Im not sure of your financial situation, but if I could have taken those classes at a 4-year institution I would have. But, the success is mainly from you. Work towards having a 3.5+ GPA and great DAT score, and that will be great support for your upward trend. The other benefit of an established program is that they have advising, which was an amazing source of support. Good luck!

Do you think I should do a post bachelorette before doing a masters like this. They just announced the program for fall is going to be online due to covid 19. I'm not sure if this will be okay for schools

My program was completely online this past year because of COVID so it shouldn't be an issue! Im not sure familiar with Masters programs, but I really liked my post-bacc because it was dental specific. I think a Masters will help you prove that you can handle a rigorous science curriculum, I have a couple of friends who did the Masters in Biomedical Sciences program at Barry University in FL and they are in dental school now so that is an option !

Thanks for sharing your experience 🙂 I had no idea matriculation rate was information shared by schools. This is very helpful 👌

of course!! If its not shared publicly, Id definitely reach out to an admissions advisor to get that info because it can help you narrow down your choices to the one that would fit you the best
