Everytime I check this website someone always talks about new pharmacy schools. I have tried to look at AACP and ACPE for new schools but always leads know where. Is there a website which I can find all these new schools?
I know the AACP wont show any because there not accredited yet. How are all of you finding this?

Actually, AACP does show the new schools. Once you go to www.aacp.org and click on Pharmacy Schools on the left menu, you then click on AACP Affiliate Institutional Members (U.S.). Hope this helps. 🙂

Hawaii is opening a school. I wouldn't mind going there. :hardy:

South University in Savannah, Georgia is a new school.

www.southuniversity.edu

It is only in it's second year. Can not get accreditted until first class graduates. It is a 3 year quarter system school.

Hey Caverject, did you hear that? South University is in Savannah, Georgia...that's, like, where you live, isn't it? You might want to check that out... 😉

Can't forget about the new Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville (by St. Louis, MO) that will be opening up for bid-ness this upcoming Fall.

Chris

Yeah, HICP isn't accredited either. That's why I said they're "opening" I guess. The list at AACP is only for accredited schools.

To find unaccredited schools I would just do a Google search.

I think Tennessee is trying to open one..

Should open in 2006 if all goes well. Latest in 2007. Will be at ETSU (east Tennessee) and associated with Quillen College of Medicine. For the first time, a person living in East Tennessee will be able to get to an "in-state" school in fewer than 500 miles. If you live here, it is literally closer to go to Canada than to UT Memphis. People here are pretty happy about it. Tennessee is a d*amn long state.

Though I've been hearing that tuition will be high, because it will essentially be a private school (private funding.) So Tenn. residents would end up paying about the same as a lot of near-by "out-of-state" institutions, like UNC, etc. Bummer.

Hey Caverject,

I hate to disappoint you, but South university in Savannah, Ga is not accreditted yet. They can not get it until the first class graduates. They tell you that when you go for an interview there. There is a sheet you sign saying that you understand that also. However, they are on a great road to getting there, and no one forsees any problems. Everything is going as planned and they shoudl get it on time. They have gotten over 500 applications this year. I personally believe that they will get 1000 plus after they do get accreditted.

According to the South University website:
For a Doctor of Pharmacy program offered by a new College or School of Pharmacy, ACPE accreditation generally involves three steps: Precandidate status, Candidate status, and Full accreditation. Precandidate accreditation status denotes a developmental program, which is expected to mature in accord with stated plans and within a defined time period. Precandidate status is awarded to a new program of a College or School of Pharmacy that has not yet enrolled students in the professional program, and authorizes the school to admit its first class. Candidate accreditation status is awarded to a Doctor of Pharmacy program that has students enrolled, but has not yet had a graduating class. Full accreditation is awarded to a program that has met all ACPE standards for accreditation and has graduated its first class. Graduates of a class designated as having Candidate status have the same rights and privileges of those graduates from a fully accredited program. ACPE conveys its decisions to the various boards of pharmacy and makes recommendations in accord with its decisions. It should be noted, however, that decisions concerning eligibility for licensure, by examination or reciprocity, reside with the respective state boards of pharmacy in accordance with their state statutes and administrative rules.

The Doctor of Pharmacy program of the South University School of Pharmacy was awarded candidate accreditation status during the June 24-27, 2004 meeting of the ACPE Board of Directors, based upon an on-site evaluation conducted March 22-24, 2004 and discussion with University and School officials. If the program continues to develop as planned, full accreditation of the Doctor of Pharmacy program will be considered by the Board following the graduation of students from the program.

So it looks like they have Candidate status, meaning graduates have the same rights as graduates from a fully accredited school. They'll be fully accredited when the first class graduates in ...when? ....2006? What do you think the chances are that they wouldn't be accredited? Seems like something crazy would have to happen to prevent it,... does anyone know?

Seems like with the "Candidate" status awarded by the ACPE and the surge in pharm applications over the past several years, as long as things continue as they have, they should get the accredidation. I'm glad this school was posted here, I didn't know about it.

Check out Touro University in CA. I interviewed there, I really like it. Professors seem very competent and staff always very helpfull. I was really impressed with their curriculum and 2 yrs class and 2 yrs practice setting. I got in, but I will turn down because I entered at UCSF.

I appreciate your message. I am in the inaugrual class and will be graduating from South University next year. There is a huge difference between having no accredidation, candidate status, and full accredidation. I am going to sit for my board exam just like anyone else in this country without any problems.

Congratulations. 👍

So do you know if there has been a date set yet for the accredidation review? I'd assume it will be after graduation.... Does it look like they'll get it the same year the first class graduates? Just wondered if you knew anything...

BTW, do they have residency placement/programs there yet? And how's Savannah? Thanks for any info.

The review will not happen until my class takes the board exam. So more than likely, it will take place in January 2007. I think they will probably get it in 2008 after watching Palm Beach Atlantic's start up process. They wait for the second class to see if there is consistancy and/or looks for a trend.

The school itself does not have a resicency placement/program. However, the city of Savannah has 4 resident positions. The positions are offered thru 2 different hospitals.

It took me a while to warm up to Savannah. "Old South" mentality is alive and well, but not nearly as bad as the 60's. It took me about a year to adjust to it, but I appreciate the area now. I like being here now, but wouldn't consder spending the rest of my life here.

I have a weired question. What will happen to the students who graduate from an unaccredited pharmacy school?

I think this may apply to all, but someone can correct me if I am wrong. I know at my LLU interview, the Dean said that even if they don't become accredited, their students can still sit for the Boards exam and get their license if they pass. Should this happen, the school will continue to make corrections and try to become accredited. Don't know how this will affects salaries, if at all, for those who graduate from unaccredited schools.

Per ACPE Policies and Procedures for Accreditation of Professional Degree Programs (http://www.acpe-accredit.org/deans/policies.asp):
A new program that has students enrolled but has not had a graduating class may be granted Candidate status. The granting of Candidate status denotes a developmental program, which is expected to mature in accord with stated plans and within a defined time period. Reasonable assurances are expected to be provided that the program may become accredited as programmatic experiences are gained, generally, by the time the first class has graduated. Graduates of a class designated as having Candidate status have the same rights and privileges as graduates of an accredited program.

If you graduate from a program that has achieved candidate status, but is not fully accredited, you are eligible to sit for the NAPLEX/MPJE, and become licensed as a pharmacist.

Thanks for the info 🙂

I didn't know about this school, but glad I know now. I'll definately look into it, I like the 3 year program as I'm already 28 and have two degrees 😆

It's almost as close to where I live as my nearest in-state school ...and even with it being private, it's only $1800 more per year than my in-state school. I'm a little wary of the unaccredited status, though. I appreciate all the information about it, I had no idea how all that worked before I stared looking into it. I'd be applying for 2006, most likely. Still gathering info on schools.

I would be worried too if accreditation was an issue, but we are not "unaccredited"

Man i really wouldnt mind going to the pharmacy school in Hawaii. Not bad at all! Get a good education and a nice tan eh?

Is anyone still interviewing with Touro? Just curious because the website indicates that the Admissions Committee is still interviewing. Is anyone still interviewing?

Do you think South Univ in Savannah is hard to get into I have a 2.71 and I am lacking pre pharm classes. They are extremly expensive and i estimated it would be nearly 100k to get thru this program.

Every year, South is becoming more and more competitive, as are all of the other schools.

I stay away from Hawaii. My sister go there and its not good school.

ETSU will not be an instate school.

they are doing the school completely with private funds and i have heard tuition is around 30k

And that sucks, because it's in my hometown. I'll have to travel 500 miles for in-state tuition, which (by the way) is higher than a lot of other states' 'in-state" rate, to go to Memphis.

I'd rather go to ETSU, besides being at home, I like Quillen better than UT, and the new pharm school will be associated with Quillen. Oh well. I'm glad they got approval for the school, anyways, but I also heard tuition would be pretty high.

i completely agree

i am from the area and know that it is not the wealthiest region in the US and unfortunatly the 2 pharm schools they are putting in there (grundy & ETSU) are going to be super expensive.

More on ETSU's new Pharmacy school

Right, the school will be private while affiliated with ETSU and Quillen. It is a lot like Virginia Tech's new med school. VCOM is private yet affiliated with VTech. They both will accept out of state applicants but will require full tuition from all.

Hey Geronimo, if you're looking for a nice rental house 5 min from Quillen, I'll be putting my home up for rent when I go to Pharm school in Memphis in 2006 (fingers crossed) 🙂

Good luck, the people at Quillen are great. Hope you like it here.

Thanks. I'm under contract on a house already. Kindness like yours is exactly why I chose Quillen.
