Anbody heard anything about new programs in the works for 2007 or 2008?
Before anyone replies with sarcastic comments, the following do NOT have new residencies planned:
IN N Out Burger
Ruby Tuesdays
TGIF
Bennigan's
Outback
Pizzaria UNOs
Culver's
McDonald's
Burger King
Now maybe some other university programs may have some in the future, but there are no restaurant-franchise planned residencies in the near works. Hopefully someone will have some academically based programs popping up.
Q
Madison WI is in the works, may be taking a class in 2007...

So if they don't get approved before apps are due do they fill their spots outside the match for next year?Madison WI is in the works, may be taking a class in 2007...

How
Really? That can't be, Ken Mattox is still alive, and I didn't think we would get one except over his dead body.
However, I did make an appeal to my good buddy Chuck to call up the administration and intimidate them a bit. Looks like he came through for me.
New programs approved this year:
Corpus Christi
Galveston
University of Wisconsin (Madison)
Will the Corpus Christi program be MD or DO?
Was told this morning that UTMB Galveston and Corpus Christi programs initial approval are on hold until Feb 2007 due to "minor" details. Both will miss the match this yr.
Regarding Baylor EM - you're right that they do not have any EM faculty on board yet; however with all the financial contraints at Ben Taub they cannot afford to hire board certified EM faculty until they hear something back from the ACGME first.
I attend UTMB and I've heard that the ER program has been in the works for years. And always it's just a rumor. I'm gonna have to hunt this Zachariah guy down and find out more. And you are right, who wants to live in Galveston anyway? I can't wait to leave, but it is a good teaching hospital. We get a nice variety of patients because we have a high population of lower socio-economic patients with all kinds of problems who travel sometimes accross Texas to come to UTMB since we have contracts with a lot of Texas. And people know, that if you don't have insurance, got to UTMB. Not to mention the inmates. Now the ER I hear can be slow at times, well I assume because of location. But we'll see.
Corpus contacted me today, they sent a word doc with sort of an outline of their curriculum and pay/benefits, and an official letter detailing their application and acceptance process. All materials must be in by Nov 6, interviews will be the last half of Nov, and acceptances dolled out in mid december.
here's a thought....are we even allowed to apply to programs that are not in the match????
I remember signing my life away recently.....to apply to be in the match....
From my Corpus letter:
"Due to the timing of this accreditation we will not be participating in the National Residency Match Program (NRMP) this year. "
I guess I need to reread the NRMP rules/restrictions. I just don't wanna be kicked out of the regular match or something. At the same time, I am sure my school would have warned me....
UCSF will finally have a program for next year's match (2008). It will be a 1-4 format with an emphasis on research.
Wow. My year they all made it into the match. I believe, but check the rules, that you can withdraw from the match prior to the day ROLs are due without violating. Once the ROL is in that is a commitment to abide by the match results. So I think you could accept a position in December or January and "safely" withdraw, but not once the ROLs are in.

As entertaining as this discussion has been here is the truth regarding the TX EM programs. UTMB did not get approved for this year, are hoping for accreditation by february, too late for the match though. Brian Zachariah is the ER chairman not the program director, Jerry Baskerville previously of Scott and White is the residency director. By the way, the ED volume at UTMB is almost 90,000 per year, Brac. is no where close to that. On to Corpus, they were approved, accepting applications outside the match, lots of work though, not sure it's worth it for a new program, probably better off going to an existing one. San Jacinto Methodist is not a trauma center, merely a small community hospital which would be a poor choice for an EM residency, certainly not anywhere close to achieving Level One or even Two status. Methodist downtown has more potential but that would put a third Level One on the block, probably not the demand for it. Bring on the entertainment.![]()

Baylor could go in with Ben Taub as their primary teaching facility for an EM program. The issue there would be that the ED at Ben Taub is surgery driven, which would require a major revision to place an EM residency. I suspect this same issue is part of what hurt UTMB. It would be difficult for them to go in with Methodist or St. Lukes as their primary facility. The program at Corpus should be an interesting one to watch, i think after their first year it should begin to blossom, time will tell. They are a sufficent distance from San Antonio and Houston that they essentially stand on their own and provide a substantial referal base, something else that probably hurt UTMB. They also have a flight program, something UTMB does not have but Hermann has a very busy one that occasionally serves UTMB. Things against them, they are a Level 3 facility, but a strong one, pediatrics are primarily treated at Driscoll instead, but rotations there are possible. It's in Corpus Christi, not a large teaching facility, may be bad or good for residents. They seem to have an affiliation with Texas A&M HSC which may serve as their major referal base for residents....Time will tell. Any other specific questions?
Yeah, but that new Chick-Fil-A residency is gonna be pretty tough.
