Hey guys,

I have been accepted into a school with only one class ahead of me, and I'm getting a little worried about residency placements. Assuming I do well in school and on my boards, will I be competitive for general surgery or anesthesiology? I don't really have a passion for derm or neuro at this point, I'm just interested in the moderately competitive slots.

Thanks for your feedback.

Having an alumni base helps. But theres no saying you cant go anesthesia or gensurg from a new school. It will prob just be tougher not having a good network developed. At this point in time as an MS-0 it is hard to say whether or not you would be competitive for gen surg even from a more recognized or older school because there is no saying how you will do in class or on boards.mYou could go to the oldest do school and screw up the step 1 and gen surg will no longer be a consideration.

Plus once you do gross anatomy, you'll realize you don't want to be standing up hunched over for hours on end and opt out for anesthesiology. With gas, you go the ACGME route because the AOA ones are weak (this is all premerger talk, doesn't matter for you). In the ACGME world DO is a DO is a DO. You they won't know the difference between them unless one is a local school. You nail step 1 and audition well then you'll get a gas spot

What specialty you match into is dependent on you, not on your school.

Coming from an inaugural class myself, there are plenty of people applying to residencies currently and getting multiple interviews into your stated specialties, and more competitive even. I guess I'll get back to you on whether or not people match in a few months [emoji6] but they will. While an alumni network is USEFUL, the school you go to by no means dictates what specialty you can go into.
