What are the names of the new medical schools that just opened in the past few years?
I have heard that 3 new ones opened this year, what are they?
Where can i find out their names?
Thanks

there were a couple in Florida and one in Texas:

Florida International University College of Medicine (Miami, Florida),
University of Central Florida College of Medicine (Orlando, Florida),
and Texas Tech University

The real question is how will they affect the chances of an average premed (i.e. out of state) getting in to these schools. I'm thinking that some of the competitive applicants from Florida and Texas will take those spots, leaving a few open in private schools for the reset of us.

I hear there's one opening that's part of/affiliated with (or something) Virginia Tech.

Wasn't the commonwealth school one of the new additions a year ago or so?

Creighton is adding about 20 to 30 seats. These added students will do the 1st 2 years in omaha and the 2nd 2 years training in Pheonix @ an affiliated hospital at which Creighton students already have the opportunity to do a couple of rotations 3rd year. No not a 'new' school but thought I should mention it.

Also Commonwealth in Pennsylvania

In the next couple of years:
Step 1 - Schools with LCME "Applicant School" Status
NOTE: Applicant Schools are not accredited
and may not recruit applicants or accept student applications.
State/Province Name of medical school Location
California Scripps School of Medicine La Jolla, CA
Michigan Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine Rochester, Michigan
New Jersey Touro University College of Medicine Hackensack, New Jersey
New York Hofstra University School of Medicine Hempstead, New York

A medical school obtains "Applicant School" status when:
1. It has paid the $25,000 application fee to the LCME to begin the process of applying for preliminary accreditation; and
2. LCME and CACMS Secretariat staff have determined that the school meets the basic eligibility requirements to apply for accreditation (i.e., a current or anticipated charter in the U.S. or Canada and plans to offer the educational program in the U.S. or Canada).

To clariOM. The new Texas school is Foster SOM. It's a Texas Tech school and it's in El Paso, not to be confused with their main school in Lubbock. small class size right now. This is its first class.

Wow...I find it interesting that there will be a California Scripps School of Medicine in La Jolla, CA. Considering Scripps is affiliated with UCSD which already has its own med school. I would assume that the California Scripps School of Medicine would somehow be affilited and have ties with UCSD SOM.

Well, the Scripps may require at least Master's degree to apply:

Sorry
i am confused
there were three new schools that opened this year, correct? What are they? Where can I find out what they are?
What other new schools have opened recently?
Thanks

^ Haven't we listed them all already?

no
what are they?
what are the three new ones from this year?
what are the new ones from recent years?

Don't mean to drag the thread off-topic or anything, so feel free to ignore, but in case anyone wants to opine:

What do you think of going to a new school? Would being the guinea pig class make you nervous, or is the provisional LCME accreditation probably good enough? I was thinking of adding one or two of the new ones to my AMCAS in case they're more sympathetic to low GPAs, but then again...
