I need to buy a couple things for rotations in Chicago such as a SUV and a new phone.
For an SUV I want something that will last, be able to take me on road trips through snow to different clinical sights but still be useful driving around downtown chicago while also being cheap. I was thinking about a 2011 jeep compass but am falling in love with the brand new mazda cx-5 although its a little too expensive. However it may end up being cheaper if i can get 0%apr.

With the disappointing new iPhone 5 release I'm debating between iPhone 5 and galaxy s3. Many physicians have recommended the iPhone but had no idea about the g-s3. I am thinking the s3 is the superior phone but where does the android app store leave me. I know they don't have NEJM but is their anything else I will gain or lose? If they are both about the same I would rather go with the iPhone 5 due to the smaller learning curve.

You do know how expensive gas is in Chicago, right? Unless you're rotating through mountainous terrain, I don't think an SUV is really necessary (and definitely not economical).

Also I vote iPhone 5 - easier learning curve and it looks pretty sweet.

^^ this.

1 - You don't need a SUV. If you're worried about snow, you need a 4WD/AWD car, like a subaru.

2 - Either one is a good choice. Get whatever's cheaper. Most people have a hidden preference. I am not a huge fan of the iPhone, so I'd probably get the S3 (actually I'd probably get neither if I were able to upgrade right now)

Just need to pick up a few things before my clinical rotations start: some groceries, extra pens, a top of the line smart phone, and, oh yeah, *a car.* You are going to be given a hard time about the way you phrased that question...

sorry if I came across as spoiled but I'm really not. The phone is a gift because I have been using a nokia black and white phone for the last two years and I don't have a iPod of any sort and wanted something to listen to music too and something to store pdf's etc. For the SUV I actually hate SUV's I would rather drive a civic or corolla but I will not be in chicago for all my rotations. I will have to drive to boston in the winter and too other places such as michigan and minnesota. I talked to people in the area and they said an suv would be a lot better than a car so I am biting the bullet. I found that the jeep compass was the cheapest for a reliable 4x4 with a 2.0 4 cyl engine.
I toyed around with the bus idea but I also don't want to be walking around in the middle of the night in the bad parts of town that I will have to rotate through. So I thought a small compact suv was the best option. If anyone has an alternative I would be the first to listen.
I really don't see how I can find a cheaper alternative to the car situation, I'll probably buy used for cheapish as possible.

Look into subaru for your car needs.

Quick google search shows that a 2011 Legacy w/ AWD has an MSRP ~20k, and gets 26 MPG

Jeep compass has a similar MSRP, and the 4WD version gets 21 MPG

If you also don't like SUVs yourself, why go through the hastle of one? The only reason I'd own a SUV over a sedan is if I wanted a larger amount of space to store things in my car. I think they're too top heavy and nonresponsive in cornering.

However, I do agree with you that you probably SHOULD get some type of car for your rotations. Bus travel isn't the safest at all points of the day.

The grand Cherokee is a great truck but much to expensive. I finally preordered the iPhone just because I wanted an iPod too and could join an unlimited family plan on the cheap. I'm debating getting a 4 year lease at 220 a month which would cost me less while in school then a used 5 year old beat up truck or car plus saving on gas. I'm going to test drive a subaru legacy with my fiancé tomorrow.

You don't 'need' any specific type of car for driving on almost any US roads. My POS car (it's as old as I am) has gotten me through many winters in New England (snowstorms, mountains, and a January newspaper route in the mountains notwithstanding) as well as across the country, up and down the East coast, and everything in between. Most people will never use the 4x4 capabilities in their cars, and it makes repairs a lot more expensive. Sure, some people feel better having that label on there, but with more $$$ going to repairs, purchase, AND gas? Seems completely unnecessary.

Now, if you're able to convince someone that you 'need' an SUV for rotations and can get help buying it, by all means go for it. But don't kid yourself about how vital it is.

OP, where are your rotations? You may not need a car.

i got to say that i prefer the iphone5. Don't get me wrong i love the s3. Already own it before the iphone5. Its just that its way 2 big. in your pocket it feel like a brick. + i love FaceTime with iPhone cause all of my friend family have a mac pc. its your choice however s3 you can download things flash etc but iPhone you're limited. I found out that s3 is better if you're a reader. ( you need to learn all of the features which can be LONG). me i rather stay simple and use a phone iTunes FaceTime fb text. by the way the touch screen on the s3 is not as good as the iPhone5 .

I was going to respond seriously to the new car thing but realized this was posted lots of months ago and OP has either realized what a poor fiscal decision he was making or bought the gas guzzler he doesn't need already. But yeah, if anyone else is faced with the decision of having to drive through adverse weather conditions, unless you're going to live in the middle of like nowhere Maine you don't need 4WD (don't even need it in nowhere Maine for the most part). You definitely don't need it if you're anywhere urban/ are doing a lot of highway driving.

You are either really spoiled or a troll. I cannot discern with certainty which....

I don't know how you are going to manage.

I got through rotations in Chicago with an Accord V6 and a phone without nav. Man, what has the world come to.
