Hi. I just graduated college with a 3.5 GPA and 32R MCAT (12 phys, 11 bio, 9 verbal). I realized medical school isn't for me, and I am now looking into podiatric schools. What are the requirements for entry? Also, is there something that podiatric schools look for in an applicant that isn't required for allopathic medical schools?

Would they even want me with my scores and naivety about podiatry schools? My mom was accepted to podiatric school a long time ago but decided not to go because she gave birth to me, that is my only connection. I am interested in finding out more.

You should consider shadowing a Podiatrist to learn more about the profession. Whoever you end up shadowing would also be able to furnish you with a letter of recommendation as one is required(?) for your app to Podiatry School.

Why is medical school not for you?

DPM schools are not as difficult to get into compared to dental, DO or MD schools.

That said most DPM schools or atleast some are integrated with other DO or MD classes so it somewhat is akin to medical school

Why do you think DO or MD aint for you

nice MCAT btw

I want to focus on treating patients as well as doing research. Being an athlete for the majority of my life, I have had a ton of foot/ankle problems. In the future, I want to integrate what I have learned through 4+ years of biomedical research with something I used to personally have to deal with. I feel as though an education in podiatric medicine will provide me with the avenue through which I can treat patients and contribute to the existing pool of knowledge of podiatric disorders.

That is why I feel like podiatry may be a better suit than medical school. I feel like I just wrote a med school essay haha.

You are more than qualified to get into Podiatry school with your scores. You just may need to work on getting your letters of recommendation. Most schools require 3 letters. Two from science professors, and in the case of podiatry school, one from a podiatrist. Having good extra-curricular activities would help, too.

Most schools will continue to accept applications until next March-July of 2012 for the Fall 2012 entering class, so you're still okay to get in if you're looking at starting in the fall. If you apply now, you could probably get in and won't need to provide letters until a deadline they give you (for example, Western needs accepted student's letters by June 1st.)

I think your goals and background would do the profession well. There is good opportunity for future podiatrists to expand on the field (from my experience of talking to other podiatrists.)

Good luck! And I hope you find Podiatry a good match for you. 🙂

Thanks! I want to try to shadow, I just don't know where to look. I shadowed an M.D. once, but he was a friend of a friend. How do people find docs of podiatry to shadow?

You can call a local podiatrist or use the link at the end of my post to find a podiatrist who has agreed to be a mentor and normally will allow shadowing.

Be sure to shadow a number of different podiatrists so you see everything the field can offer. Some people only shadow one doc and therefore may only see 1 type of patient (ie all nail trimmings/wound care or all surgery).

good luck
