Someone at our school just posted the page in the soon to be released issue of U.S. News and World Report with medical school rankings on this Friday, April 1.

For the first time since 1997 or 1998 (I forget), they included a new college of pharmacy ranking.

Without further ado, here they are:

1. University of California–San Francisco 4.6
2. University of Texas–Austin 4.4
3. University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill 4.2
4. Purdue University (IN) 4.1
University of Arizona 4.1
University of Michigan–Ann Arbor 4.1
University of Minnesota–Twin Cities 4.1
8. University of Illinois–Chicago 4.0
University of Kentucky 4.0
University of Maryland–Baltimore 4.0
11. Ohio State University 3.9
University of Florida 3.9
University of Wisconsin–Madison 3.9
14. University of Southern California 3.8
University of Utah 3.8
University of Washington 3.8
17. University at Buffalo–SUNY 3.7
University of Iowa 3.7
University of Kansas 3.7
University of Tennessee–Memphis 3.7
21. Virginia Commonwealth University 3.6
22. University of Georgia 3.5
23. U. of Colorado–Denver and Health Sciences Center 3.4
University of Pittsburgh 3.4

I know they really don't mean much when selecting your school, but it's fun to see where your school ranks.

Damn, UNC is number 3? didn't know they're ranked that high. 😉

Hi!

This list is totally uninclusive as it has NO private schools ranked at all. Its all based on NIH funding.

What is the ranking based on? Perception? Funding? I think the University of Southern California is the only private school ranked.

I thought US new used several criteria, NIH funding only being one of them... the pure NIH rankings can be seen at AACP site, and they're completely different.

I remember seeing what the criteria for US News was somewhere, but I don't remember them all. I know one was funding, one was "student satisfaction" or something like that (student opinion), another had something to do with publications of alumni... I don't remember them all. But it's not NIH funding alone, I don't think.

I know..but I didn't want to be mean. Afterall, it was as wide as your girlfriend and I don't need that much girth to insult you. :meanie:

Is it just me or did Kentucky take a nose dive?

Well at least they're still accredited...for now!

😀

Wisconsin, USC, and Pitt are too low. Wisconsin should be top 3. Of course this isn't based on anything empirical, so it should be taken with a grain of salt. Unless their methods have changed since last time.

Am I the only one who finds it a little odd that this report comes out April 1? Or am I just starting to act paranoid like the patients at my site?

lol well i can tell you that we did not get a survey to fill out here for student satisfaction.... anyone else get one??

Maybe you stepped out of the room to get a drink of water when the survey was passed out at your school. Or...maybe it's just a big conspiracy to keep you from participating!!

Hell yeah! I hate those private schools!

Oh wait. I better wait until June 4 to say that...

I haven't read what the scores are based on yet. The page that was e-mailed that included the rankings just had a story on a pharmacist who owns his own pharmacy in Baltimore and how pharmacy and the role of pharmacists have changed recently. According to an e-mail our dean just sent, "The 2005 U.S.News and World Report rankings are based upon a survey of deans and department heads of the nation’s 89 pharmacy schools."

Are only 24 schools in the ranking or are more schools included in the actual US News magazine?

and the United nations rates the united states below cuba in health care. Sometimse the people who rank things really are mega idiots.

OH NO!!!! My private school was not ranked, again. Funny thing is that I was accepted into three of those schools on the list. All three of them were easier to get into than where I currently am.

I guess I will just have to be happy with the fact that I will make just as much money as all the people going to the cool ranked schools.

how come the gpa's are on a 5 point scale? i know some high schools are on a 5 point scale if you take AP but didnt know universities/colleges do that too...? @@

i don't think those numbers are GPA

Doesn't matter... USC has the best football team...

US NWR ranking blows.. Gourman report might be little better...

But who cares? What do you call a person who graduated from the worst pharmacy school...last in his class as long as he passes the board? Pharmacist.

and when it comes down to it, wouldn't you rather go to a pharmacy school that has a pretty campus in a warm and inviting part of the country even if it is not at the tip top of the list.?

I know I would. Four years of one's life is too long to spend it north of the mason dixon line.

oh no i've said too much!

How does anyone study at the southern California schools anyway? The weather's always too nice, and the beach is just a hop, skip, and leap away. It's too tempting and distracting compared to being cooped up all day in the library going over your pharmacology notes.

Isn't that ranking crap based on NIH funding? What EXACTLY is this pharmacy ranking based upon? State schools always get it easy with the state residents paying all the taxes. Blehh.

With the availability of jobs these days, wouldn't you rather pay half as much to go to a public funded state school versus a private school? I regret not doing that before having to pay double for out of state charges rather than going to my state school (VCU). Paying back those loans will not be fun.

Anyway, I've read the issue now, and the rankings are based on subjective surveys. There are no objectives measures used like GPA, graduation rates, etc. I believe that's the reason why the dental schools have not been ranked for a while. Dental schools have been boycotting the U.S. News rankings due to the fact that they were purely subjective scores rather than using any objective measures.

People are so bitter about the entire ranking issue. =P

Just think of it this way, if it doesn't matter to you, then don't worry about it.

If you got into one of the ones listed, it's another thing you can add to your CV.

No harm done either way.

it looks like it is going to be very nice!

i need to visit South before i say with 100% assurance that Samford is the prettiest...
Do I need to bother Caverject?

According U.S. and World news....
These rankings are based on two types of data: expert opinion about program quality and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school's faculty, research, and students. For the rankings in all five areas, indicator and opinion data come from surveys of nearly 1,300 programs and almost 9,600 academics and professionals conducted in fall 2004.
