The uk has just anounced some of their new visa rules. The big change for us that I see is that our SO's would no longer be able to get work visas (or any visas) as one of our dependants. Which is a big drawback!

I personally am still trying to decide between schools (including RVC and UCD), and my husband getting a "free" work visa in england was a big draw over ireland... Why do they have to go and make it harder for us!

I just read the link and it looks like that only applies to lower level students? graduate students will still be able to bring their SO's as dependents with a work visa?

I was under the impression that graduate students means Masters level or higher, and we are just getting Bachelors degrees.

But I hope I'm wrong!

This sounds like it's going to be a LOT more complicated. And no work visas for SOs? Uuuuuugh.

Oh forgot that the UK is different! You are right then that it probably applies. 🙁

At least we can all speak english at an "upper intermediate level".... hopefully 🙂 jk

This brings me an incredible am mount of sadness. I am accepted at UCD Ireland and wait-listed at Glasgow. I am having horrible problems trying to figure out how to get the SO over to Ireland and I was hoping to get called into Glasgow because I thought it would be much easier.

Let's hope I get off the wait-list for ISU. :xf:

I honestly don't know what to do if I don't....🙁

Awaring - I agree it totally sucks! I'm happy we're finding this out before April 15th, but I wouldn't mind if they had waited a few years.
I am deciding between UCD and RVC, and was leaning towards RVC since I knew my SO would be able to come with me. Then they go and change it all!

I'm still hoping my So can magically find employment in Dublin, but ideally I'd know that before committing to going there.

Hopefully you get into your IS and don't have to make a crappy decision! its too bad ucds deposit is so big as well...

Right now I am searching with my SO to find legit jobs that he can do online or from home. I think as long as they can prove that they have income or enough money to support themselves for the stay Ireland doesn't really care what they do.

ISU isn't my IS (Cornell is, which really sucks) but it is the only school in the US that I got wait-listed for.

This couldn't be easy, could it?

It doesn't surprise me. Ireland's economy is going down like Greece. The UK has a massive problem with illegal immigration and work is hard to find for many people. A lot of my classmates from high school are getting fed up.

Mhm, looking at the world debt clock (not sure how accurate these are, but ) Ireland is not doing well with the Public debt to GDP ratio at 111% while it's External debt to GDP ratio is over 1125%! 😱

EDIT: Anyways, it seems as though making the decision to go abroad is made more difficult. I hope there is some kind of exception?

I know that, in Ireland, Vet School is not considered 'high enough' to get your spouse a work permit. Only PhD level is eligible.

I assumed Vet School would count, but I was wrong (at least in Ireland)

You all do realize Ireland is not part of the UK right? Only Northern Ireland. (Just checking!! 🙂)

And vet school is a Bachelor's Degree in all places other than the US, so it is a "lower level."

Yup! That's why I say Ireland and the UK. I try not to say Northern Ireland or Ulster in reference to the area. Too politically charged terms. Better to refer to specific areas, like Belfast. Having spent some time in England, I'm more sensitive to the climate.😉

Sorry, my post was unclear.

I didn't mean to imply that Ireland's rules were the same as the UKs. I was just saying that Ireland does not consider Vet School to be a 'high enough' level of education to allow a spouse/dependents to stay in the country (I was shocked).
