New Year's Resolutions

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Alright, folks.....these were last year's resolutions - how'd ya'll do??

My resolution was to run a sprint triathalon. I didn't end up doing it because I did the Nike Women's Half Marathon, instead. 🙂

Thank god I'm not alone on this one. I cracked open a beer the other night and then realized it was only 4pm! 😱 It seemed like it had been dark for ages so it was proper drinking time...
I miss chii chan. Looks like she left SDN. Anyone know how she's doing (she doesn't allow PMs it appears)?

- Fit into my nice suit! I bought it mid-way through my freshman year, when I had lost my freshman fifteen... and then I went back to my original weight and heavier!

Not quite there, but I'm back at the weight I started college at... 10 or so more lbs to go until my suit fits comfy enough to wear professionally. A tad bit too tight right now.

- Successfully put fondant on a cake. No cracks, no ripples.
Somewhat successful. Not quite no cracks, no ripples, but very close to it. Doing a ninja cake tomorrow for my brother!

- Figure out my new DSLR (<3) and take awesome pictures of sloths in Costa Rica.
Didn't see any sloths in Costa Rica (maybe this spring!) but I've taken more pictures of the sloth I work with than the poor little guy has ever had taken in his life. See avatar.

- 8hrs of sleep a night. (Exceptions exist for physics and chemistry tests, but that's all.)
Yeah right.

- Learn the basics of glowstringing/possibly take a poi class.
The course wasn't offered again. :C Should really get back to try glowstringing.

- Pet a reindeer. Corollary: Not freeze to death studying abroad in Finland.

(Still living, too.)

I really need to get some exercise and get in better shape for the new year. That is one of my resolutions. Another one is not to tell my grown kids what to do (too much). I will also try to be more tolerant of my husband's forgetfulness and absentmindedness (since nobody's perfect...including me).

After my first year of being 21, I need to quit spending my vet school savings at the bars 🙄

1. Be more responsible with my finances.
Success! I have a buffer zone, and that's after having laid out $2,500 in first months/security deposit this month. Helps that I got hired full time too.
2. Lose those last 15-20 lbs and keep them off... I want to be able to go to Express or another trendy store and not be told they "don't carry that size in-store, you could try online, but really, we don't cater to you."
Also success! I now fit Medium tops and 6/8 pants from Express 😀

3. Be a good student, assuming I get in to vet school.
Kind-of success, as I didn't get in to vet school, but I did pull an A in my Physiology class and plan on another in Public Speaking this spring.

So I guess 2011 was a good year for my willpower and resolutions. It was a bad year in a couple other ways, but I didn't give up on my main goals. So. On to 2012...
1. Operation Buffness (best term ever Cautionary Tail) This year the plan is to maintain my current weight/size and to get buff. Do a pull-up, run an actual 5k race.
2. Improve my application for school. I didn't really do as much as I could have last year, as I was really paralyzed by the rejections. I resolve to soldier on and get the experience and grades I need, and start VMCAS when it comes out! Also, to apply internationally.
3. See my family more often. I don't really do family get-togethers well, and I've had the great excuse of it costing so much to get home. Now that I make better money and get time off, it's time to be a better daughter.

Honestly... if you haven't tried already I strongly recommend pole dancing. Before you stop reading this and when you stop laughing- try looking around your area for a pole dance school. Women from *every* walk of life can pole and I found the classes to be extremely supportive, welcoming and inviting! All the girls are there to just help each other out and have a bit of fun!

I really suck at going to the gym, and I found pole dancing really gives you a full work out- from your arms, to your core, to your legs... after 20 minutes on the pole I'm literally drenched from sweating but you just want to jump back up on there for more! lol.

If you (or anyone else reading this) is looking for a fun work new way to work out... pole dancing is totally the way to go!!

this sounds like a total advertisement but I'm being serious. Uugh! I love pole dancing!!!

Congrats, FTB and Trilt on all your achievements this year! Well done. I love your reindeer picture, Trilt. How was Finland?

My own resolution: I NEED to get in better shape. I'm thinking of doing the couch to 5k. Anyone else thinking about that for this year?

I'll bet the pole dancing is fun, but probably not the right exercise for yours truly. First, I have never heard of any pole dancing courses/studios around my area, and also I'm no spring chicken and am afraid I'd throw my back out or something!

I love the Old Spice man.

I don't know if I participated last year, but I did my resolutions from last year... so let's try for a second round of success!

1. Break my horse to drive. The guy who I board with is convinced that since she's part standardbred, this is a great idea. I think it'd be a fun summer project, and while I don't actually want to drive her anywhere... it'd be nice to have a concrete goal to achieve with my mare, since college/vet school has ruined any sort of performance/competition-related ones.

2. Run a 10k. And actually pay for it, instead of just running 10k in my neighborhood and being like "yay look at me". Preferably acquire a t-shirt that proves I did this.

3. Run a really fast 5k. Not telling how fast I want to go, because then I'd feel like a ***** if I don't go that fast this year. Also acquire t-shirt for this one.

I did my one resolution: C25k. I completed the program over the summer, buuut school hit me, and before long I was back to not running.

This year's goals:

1) Run more, and keep at it for the long term
2) Continue to eat with care - I started logging calories with livestrong.com and that was super helpful in losing some of the extra chubalub this year, but I want to keep at it, lose a bit more, buy new jeans, and looking freaking awesome at my wedding in May.
3) I was going to say eat less chips and salsa, but who am I kidding? I love chips and salsa. I just stocked up on my favorite kind before leaving my mom's house the other day; six jars, and I'm sure they'll only last a couple of weeks.

1.) Stay after school for at least an hour (preferably 2 hours) every day to review that day's materials and keep up in my classes.

2.) Work out 4 times per week.

3.) Train for and run the Cleveland Half Marathon in May.

1. Start running more consistently and longer distances. Aim for a 5k later in the year to keep me honest about it.

2. Find a way to ride more often. More consistent lessons? Maybe finding a lease if I can swing it with work schedule?

3. Actually bring a bag with me in to the store instead of forgetting it in the car. Hoping the new bag tax that started today in my county will help with this.

Starting to seriously consider pole dancing as a way to both get in shape and maybe pay for vet school...

My resolutions are boring, but I want to be successful this year (unlike every other where I set the bar too high and drop my resolution by the end of the first week):

1) Stop taking home pens from work. I usually stuff a couple in my pockets during the day and then forget to unload them upon exiting the hospital. Now I have a treasure trove of my hospital's pens which I think may stay in this residence until I am an old woman.

2) Commit an hour a day on my days off to studying something new or brushing up on some of my undergrad courses. I am embarrassed about how much I have forgotten in physiology and endocrinology since I graduated in 2010. Plus, I need to get my brain in shape. Is there a couch to 5k for my brain?

Am I the only one who doesn't like the idea of resolutions? Every New Year I always hear people talking about wanting to change all of these things that they don't like about themselves. There's always this underlining negative theme laced in resolutions. Don't get me wrong, I think its great to set goals and work towards them. There's nothing quite like the satisfaction of obtaining a personal goal! I'd just rather focus on what I am happy with in my life and let that positivity drive me. Enough of that though. :d

Anyways. Having said my mini-rant. I'd love to work out more. I'm not one to go to a gym or run around the neighborhood (I find them both extremely boring). I'd love to join a tennis program or take ice skating lessons or something along those lines.

Or heck, maybe I'll look into pole dancing classes.... 😆

Make the dean's list every quarter this year!

(and lose ten pounds!)

I always try making resolutions, but I don't think I've ever gotten one into February. Generally because they're insane and completely unsustainable.

It always seems reasonable on new years eve that I will be able to get a full year 4.0, promptly fold my laundry, write a novel, run a marathon, and turn myself into Jason Statham in the subsequent 12 months.

Then reality happens.

The last few years, I've been sitting down and listing the things that either cause me stress or make me unhappy about myself or my life, then posting it prominently. I find that works better.

This makes me very glad that I always empty my pockets before leaving work, otherwise I too would have an unwieldy number of work pens at home. Somehow I always manage to accumulate pens throughout the day. I'll start with one in the morning and when I'm getting ready to leave in the evening, realize that I now have four or five pens in my pockets! Where do they all come from!?
So, my Resolution 4: Stop stealing other people's pens through the day!

*whatever*! Laugh it up, mock me about the pole dancing... but just you wait.

When the zombie apocalypse happens and you are cornered between encircling zombies and a pole... you'll be sorry that you can't caterpillar crawl your way up it, or knock out zombies with an extended fireman spin. You will be sorry.

Suddenly my pushups and situps seem so... useless.

Same as everyone else... get in shape, exercise more, eat healthier, blah, blah, blah.

Oh and my other resolution... GET INTO VET SCHOOL!!! (ok, so I can't control this one as much, but I am determined it is going to happen this year. 🙂.... I hope).

Well, my resolutions from last year flopped. Did not get into vet school (unless you count getting accepted this application cycle at the end of December😉).

I did lose 30 pounds, but it was because I got incredibly sick between March and July. Between March and October of last year, I had a fairly rough time. Things are looking great now! So my resolution remains to keep the weight I lost off and to actually attempt to exercise more. I absolutely love hiking and indoor rock climbing but I haven't done much of it because of that rough patch I was having so I would like to start doing more of that.

Second New Year's Resolution is to try to save up as much money as possible for traveling for my interviews and for moving once it becomes time to go to vet school.

Hope everyone has a great, happy, healthy and stress-free (as much as possible) 2012!! 😀

1. 100 Push Up Challenge My friend did it last year (yes, she is a girl). She couldn't do ONE push up before she started, and she ended up doing 100+!! I'm doing this with my boyfriend. Possibly the 200 sit up challenge too. Oh, and there's an app for both 😀

2. Exercise 4x per week (yoga, running). Yeah, yeah, the generic exercise promise. Sometimes all you need is a fresh start to get in the groove again...

3. See my friends more. This is so important for me, as someone who is a total homebody. I vow to not let facebook be my major means of communication this year!!! 😱

:luck: everyone with yours!

LOVE! I've never seen this before...I think I'll give it a go!

1.) Work out and lose some weight (i've lost about 15 pounds so far) and i still have a good ways to go until my goal.

2.) I want to take more pictures. I have 2 digital cameras, fairly new, a semi-large memory card and empty photo albums... this is a problem.

3.) Get into vet school, and if not start working on a master's.

4.) Spend more time with family and friends... I honestly never have a life outside of school and work. lol

Happy new year everyone!!

1) Stop wasting my money by letting groceries spoil (I hate this more than ANYTHING)!

2) Take more photos with my stupidly expensive camera that I just HAD to buy two years ago before my Ireland trip.

3) Go to church more...

I have to give that a try.
Exercise was on my new years resolution list since I have a free pass to the university gym. Of course... I wake up New Years day with a sore throat. So that resolution will begin as soon as I am back to feeling 100%.

1. To stop snacking and picking at food. Even when I'm not hungry I find myself constantly taking handfuls of chips or whatever food I have laying around the house.

2. To stop spending money on stuff I really don't need. I'm always amazed when I get my credit card bill and $300 went towards restaurants or unnecessary junk.

3. To no longer use the "my iPod is dead excuse" or something similar to not go to the gym.

4. To show a little more respect and kindness towards my boyfriend. With all the stress of applying and my new job I haven't been as nice to him as I could be.

Most realistic new years resolution...

LOVE! I've never seen this before...I think I'll give it a go!

I have to give that a try.

YES! Check out the site. You just do an initial test to see how many you can make yourself do (i literally can not do ONE) and then follow the given routine for you. The app makes it so easy. I'm starting it tonight! My bf and I did the initial test yesterday and he is sooooo sore, but it should be fun!!! 👍

My husband makes me feel bad. He's the sort that does 200 at a time on a regular basis. It's sorta fun to watch, but then I feel fat and lazy. 🙄

Whatever. Your husband is probably mad hot. Surely that makes up for whatever lazy feelings you have!

1. Read ahead for class each day

2. Outline each days' lectures after class

3. Continue losing weight so I can be sexy as hell when I turn 25

that's all I've got. I don't normally make resolutions so we'll see how this goes.

Here's my one resolution. Even though there are some other things that could use attention (like my bathroom scale, perhaps) I think I'll focus on what's most important.

1. Don't have another finals week like THAT.

There you have it. I'll do better during the year so that I'm not trying so hard to squeak by during finals week.
