New York COM (NYIT-COM) Discussion Thread 2014 - 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I feel bad, but I'm going to wait until post-decision to tell everyone my stats. I'm also an odd non-traditional situation and my stats kinda stand out. Not that I act like an ass on these forums or do anything that worries me about being judged based on my SDN activity, but id like to maintain whatever small amount of anonymity I have left. Then again some of my previous posts may have given my interview group an idea lol. I was the wonky guy who showed everyone my wonderful beluga whale picture while we were waiting for our interviews.

Good Luck to everyone though. This is exciting news and hopefully we all hear back soon.

Hey,
For financial aid you will need to do a FAFSA ( which may include a promissory note, counseling etc) it can all be found online at https://fafsa.ed.gov/. After you do this, and submit it, you will need to log on to NYIT connect and go to the To Do section and complete a form VIII for financial aid. You can then fax or mail it to them. Once you complete the FAFSA and form VIII you will see under the financial aid section of NYIT connect a section detailing your estimated need. Around May or June they will start sending out award letters to students with a submitted FAFSA . You will then accept the award and be on your way. DO NOT WAIT TO DO A FAFSA! It honestly should have been started in January if you are planning to attend school in the Fall. Good luck if you have any questions feel free to message me.
Thanks so much for clearing this up!

How about a entire semester of withdrawals as well as a C+ in Orgo I and Physics I

Can NYIT see where applicants stand with regards to MD schools? I didnt think this was the case. A lot of posters on sdn have said MD schools cant see anything related to DO, so I figured the opposite was true as well

Not entirely sure. I would imagine that they gotta know if a student is accepted elsewhere or not eventually. Although a students lack of paying the semester bill will probably weed out 99.9% of them.

I think mainly the wait until April 30th is because they can know for sure how many seats will clear up due to MD acceptances. Not that they get access to where you applied on the MD side of things. Again, I've never worked in admissions so I wouldn't know for sure. I would doubt that you should be concerned about it. Who knows, MD could just be your backup plan.

can your reliable source tell us if there are even any seats available.
Bro, if they are still interveiwing their are seats left!! They don't want to waist there money paying staff per hour to do interveiws.

Lemme hear numbers guys and gals from all late February till April Interveiws?? I wanna see if they interviewed same #s on mcat and gpa during that 8/10 week span... I got 25 mcat, 3.9cgpa 3.85 sgpa, (out of state).

Interviewed 4/8, 27MCAT, 3.7cGPA, 3.6 sGPA, NY resident, got a BA in Anthropology and BS in Biology, plenty EC/research/shadowing/volunteering etc, felt great about my interview and really connected with the interviewer! Hoping for good news next week!

We're definitely going to hear back next week! Called admissions today and they said we'll definitely hear back then! I interviewed at the end of February and I don't know if these stats apply to March interviewees as well.

obviously there are some seats available. But its scary to think there are like 10 months of interviewees for a couple dozen spots.

Current students/residents of LI:

I recently visited the campus and although the various neighborhoods were beautiful, I did not see anyone 18-60 whenever we grabbed a bite. I know students are busy, but being from somewhere were there are so many younger people, it was kind of a shock for the entire family. I am planning to take another trip there soon, so does anyone know where all the young people hang out? Is this because it's such a commuter school? I got the sense that everyone just packed up for the drive home every day. I know I will be busy as well, but we must've really missed a few key areas considering how so many schools/SUNY campuses are here. Just for clarification, I am not looking for clubs or anything like that. Maybe just popular restaurants and cafes/general areas where people go shopping. I just want to make sure that I got the right impression. Having always lived in college towns/city, I guess I was expecting the same thing.

Not a college town by any means, but it is not an old person area either. Need a car to get around but there are nice little town areas such as locust valley, sea cliff etc...

I went to NYIT for undergrad. 100000 percent commuter school. It is definitely not a college town. The area is nice for a family's. But you might need some time to adjust and discover the area. It's Long Island. There is everything you could ask for near by. Just got to look for it. Making friends with other students, most from the area is a must.

Does anyone know about how many seats are left? (like based on the size of facebook group?)
Anyone else call to ask about decisions, especially for March interviewees?

No idea...and I don't think it will be a fair representation anyway. Someone on this forum said before that many older class members join the group to try and sell housing. Also I'm sure not everyone, myself included, that has been accepted has joined the group yet.

Still "patiently" waiting from February...
Same here... I was passing by NYCOM campus on the weekend, thinking that may be they are looking at our files right now... My husband suggested to drop in and get them some complimentary pizzas lol so that they don't waste time going out to lunch to speed up the decision making process. But of course we did not...

Crazy excited and looking forward to hearing our decisions this week! I'm hoping they speed through the files with many good decisions for us all. Just being on these forums alone shows our enthusiasm for medical school; we all deserve a chance!
:highfive: :highfive: :highfive:
We've got this ladies and gents!

I called and asked them if they met for the last week of March interviewees, and they said "not yet..." And I asked if hearing back this week or next week was a possibility and she said "maybe next week?"

:/ I have a 2K deposit due somewhere this week guys. Sighhhh

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I just called admission and although the class is not full they told me that the admissions committee has still not met. The woman I spoke with told me that we should hear next week, but really all we can do is wait. I told her that that is what I have been told for a month now, but she said she didn't have anymore information for me at this time. I interviewed the first week of March, so I have been assuming my decision would be grouped with the last week of February, but I have no clue...... maybe someone else will get different information if they call? :/ this is no fun.

Ugh! Yeah, I just called too, but didn't even give my name and was told the same thing. She said next week, but it did not sound convincing ... lol She did mention that "it's only Monday" so it's possible that they plan to meet this Thursday.... I will probably call and bother later this week on Friday to see if that happened....

Hey yall waiting to hear back from Interviews feb 21 through April 11... I spoke to admissions a number of times and concluded the following: they schemed everyone into thinking there gonna hear back 4-6 weeks. Really were waiting till April 30 ie- MD deadline!!! Now that this day reached they know how many avail seats there are. Thus the commitee will meet this whole weekend and decide by Tuesday who will be granted an acceptance!! This u will all receive letters via mail by Friday!!!!! Hang in their peeps!!

The committee hasn't even met yet so I wish you were right, but it appears next week is the soonest we will hear :/

And you have to add at least three days for postal service.

I only had my interview in mid April and I'm already itching to hear back. Can't imagine waiting so long like some of you guys. Good luck to everyone!

Going to check the mail so hard tomorrow... 😀

Edit: To the people who called today, were any of you part of the last week of February? Maybe they are doing it in waves based on interview date?

I called today and they were just like the committee hasn't met yet.. which doesn't make any sense.. I mentioned that I interviewed at the end of February but maybe she assumed I said March? to give them the benefit of the doubt!

Yeah, are you IS or OOS? I am OOS so hopefully that explains why I am lagging behind a bit. Even if I do not get in, I am just happy that I am finally out of "purgatory".

I'm out of state as well. I really hope you all get great news shortly!

I hope everyone who got interviewed hears great news in the coming days.
Any chance they're still handing out interview invites?

Possibly (w/ regards to interviews) but it seems more improbable since April 30th passed. A few straggler schools I was waiting to hear back from, and I assumed silently rejected me, sent me final rejection emails the other day so it looks like most schools are winding down 2014-2015 and getting ready for 2015-2016. Goodluck to everyone still waiting to hear back, I've been following the process since February and it looks like the train may finally be moving again. It will pay off someday...

Just called admissions. My interview was Feb 25. The lady said "something will be going out for you either this week or next", and I asked if she knows if the decision on me has been made yet, she said she cannot give that info, but added "they might still be looking at your file". May be its just me, or may be all of us from Feb 25, hard to say....

what i dont get is that, how did that one person get accepted while so many other applicants are still waiting to hear back after calling admission. doesnt make sense to me....

It could be that the committee is still only going through 1 week of interviewees at a time. This would be most fair since someone waiting 10+ weeks shouldn't be waiting for a decision when someone 2 weeks post interview (like 3rd/4th week of april) hears back.

Still won't stop me from intensely checking the mail today haha. Maybe they just did the 24th to increase moral. At least that's what I'm hoping.

Also a thing to consider is that not everyone accepted uses SDN. Quite a few people could have been accepted yesterday also.

I'm just happy everything is moving now. Even if it's terribly confusing. Maybe admissions was told that they cannot disclose any acceptances over the phone, even if its starting back at them from the computer screen. It might be a policy thing outside their control.

So they made decisions on 24 but not 25? That makes no sense

Haha yeah that part makes no sense to me either. As a February 25th hopeful it is a little concerning, but I gots the faith.

Exactly! But then again may be its just on my file, there's no way to tell, everyone should better call individually and check by name.
