New York COM (NYIT-COM) Discussion Thread 2014 - 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey,
First post but I got accepted today! I've been trolling this forum for weeks now trying to figure out the pattern of acceptances! lol. I guess I'll throw in my stats to help out those of you still waiting.... I interviewed on February 20th, which was a Friday. My original interview was February 3rd but it was rescheduled due to snow. My accepatnce letter was dated February 26th. My stats are hopefully encouraging... I have a 29 MCAT (8P,11V,10B), a Psychology BA with a 3.5 cgpa ,3,4 sgpa and an MBS with a 3.4gpa. I have virtually NO research, shadowing or volunteer experience. I did have an MD LOR from the doctor I was able to shadow. I also have 3 years working as a counselor for clients with mental illnesses. The interview was very straight forward, what's your name, why do, what is important about do?etc I honestly though it didn't go great but here I am. Goodluck everyone I'm a second time applicant and I finally feel like I'm out of limbo 🙂

Also, anyone else find it rushed that we only have until the 20th to submit the deposit? I have to get that cash together! haha

i just got an interview invite, thankfully.
Do i have a realistic chance of being accepted this late in the cycle? Or am I fighting for a spot on the wait list?

yes... from my understanding there are spots open as long as there are interviews good luck

Yeah, some schools will end up interviewing you for a spot on the waitlist unless you can absolutely WOW them in the interview. NYIT does not appear to be this way and it feels as if the interview feels is only a small factor of your overall application. So if you got an interview you are doing really great right now. I have also heard people getting accepted post interview early May, which is rather crazy in the context of other schools but feels pretty normal here. Good Luck!

For the people waiting on an interview invite, where are they at "date wise" on interview slots? Are they past April now?

Has anyone sent an update letter here? I don't have a new transcript or a new MCAT score but I've shadowed and done a lot of volunteer stuff since I applied. I wonder how this school responds to updates?

Does anyone know how late they send out interviews? My app was completed the second week of Feb. Haven't heard anything yet besides confirmation of completion.

Did you get this on e-mail or snail mail?

Interview invites are for March - April

That's really good news then! Sounds like there are a lot of spots still left. Back in December I could only get super late February or early March. So that's pretty good considering we are into March now and not many new slots have opened up since then. We know they interview into May, so those slots gotta go to someone. Perhaps they are waiting for the current batch to settle. Then all of the people waiting for II's will get their chance to interview.

Accepted! Also interviewed the 3rd week of February but was originally scheduled in January. I'm undecided right now because I'm sitting on another acceptance from VCOM in South Carolina. That school will be a lot less expensive as far as tuition and living so I'm torn. Need some advice because I loved this school.

my opinion is NYIT is enough of an upgrade over VCOM that it might be worth considering. of course this depends on how much money were talking here. if you'd like to share details via PM I'd love to offer my little bit of helpful insight.

accepted today! interviewed in the 3rd week of February and this is my top choice. 3.6 GPA, 29 MCAT (9,10,10), and a lot of research experience but no recent clinical research or LOR from MD/DO

I'm just praying I will see something in the mail today or tomorrow... :bag: I am out of state right now.. hoping USPS is just taking few days.
I'm in the same boat.
Edit: I guess I'm the only one in that boat now. I just noticed that I missed your second post. Womp!

Can anyone comment on the interview itself? Specifically, what questions came up and your thoughts about the school. Would appreciate any advice or input! Thanks in advance!

Very laid back and my interviewer was very upfront by saying she had specific questions given to her, and that it would last anywhere from 10-20 minutes. Really got the vibe the interview doesnt mean much here so dont stress it

I think it really depends on the interviewer. Mine wasn't as laid-back as everyone said. My interviewer was quite stoic, not rude but not the most friendly. He had my file and asked me a lot about my research (about half the interview) and also what I thought of the school. I didn't think it went 100% but I got accepted. One of the med students giving the tour told me that the interview was mainly to make sure we're not crazy.

I love your last sentence. It seems that I was crazy. I got an II last year, but then I was rejected.

Yikes I'm sorry! I didn't mean to imply that >_> Not my words, I put the blame on the tour guide.

Hmm I think the interview has a pretty big impact. I was waitlisted at this school last year after not so great interview (I was pretty under prepared it seemed), but I got in this year with a really great interview experience. For me, it really had to do with how the interviewer approached me. There are some that follow the given guidelines and look for your true understanding of wanting to do DO, there are some that decide not to follow the given guidelines and facilitate more conversational, free flowing conversation to see how you present yourself. In any case, you should do all you can to get the basics down - why you want to do DO, why this school in particular, and why medicine. But be prepared to answer any questions based on your application. It looks like they really want to seek those individuals that can succeed and willing to seek opportunities actively to succeed.

If anybody wants to PM me for my interview experiences at this school, please feel free! 🙂

Anyone get confirmation after sending back deposit? If so how long after sending.

They send you another notice via snail mail about 1-1.5 weeks after. I also received an email from Certiphi for criminal background checks a few days after sending them my deposit.

It came to me in a dream, jk I was accepted early so I got the letter.

I was complete in January and still waiting to hear back....🙁

Anyone hear back from 4th week of February interviews?

4th week here, nothing yet. I am OOS, but regionally close so I'm assuming that if I get accepted, that it will be a day after I see everyone post it here. Should be soon though considering we got most of 2nd and 3rd week last week.

Good Luck!

Any new interview invites? Congrats to those of you who received invites in the past two weeks!!!!

I got one today, I'm not sure if it would fiscally just for me to go out there. It would be a pretty expensive flight to be fighting for a wait list spot. I know it has been talked about on this thread, but is there any more updates regarding if these are interviews for wait list spots or just for a regular seat? I have my deposit already in at a school, but would like to go to NYIT over where I am already.

Thanks for any help.

I think it would really depend on whether you want a spot at this school. It sounds like out of maybe 15-20 students they would be interviewing per week, they don't necessarily send out all of those students acceptances, correct? From what I am seeing on the Facebook group & the small sample size on SDN, it seems like there still a lot of seats left. If you attend the interview and if you impress the interviewer, you will likely have a high chance of getting an acceptance.

I am not sure when you would be interviewing but I think it would really depend on whether you would want to go to school or not.

I agree here. I think it's up to you to weigh it out. Anecdotally it appears that this school will accept students up until the end and do not interview for waitlist spots. It does however get more difficult to get in as time passes. I would weigh the costs against your chances. If you are on the average or above the school's average stats, I would think you would have a good chance if you think you can interview well. The interviews are typically considered low stress and not an overwhelming factor in the process (least based on our perception). There are exceptions as people have posted and even in these situations people are getting accepted.

I am a current applicant and post interview/pre-final decision. So take my comments with a grain of salt. Its up to you in the end. Perhaps try scanning previous threads to see how late people are getting accepted.

Good Luck!

I'm in, I'm in, I'm in!!! Class of 2019 FTW! I believe I'll be attending.
FYI - ii 2nd week of Feb, IS.

That's incredible news! When was it post marked? Was it lost in the mail or another wave if acceptances?
